Hialeah unveils portrait of colorful ex-mayor

The city of Hialeah recalled a colorful anecdote last week when it accepted a portrait of former Mayor Henry Milander.

The presentation of the portrait, which will hang at City Hall, included a mention from 1957, when a reporter asked Milander if it was true he had fixed 500 traffic tickets for his constituents.

?That?s a goddam lie,? Milander said. ?I fixed 5,000.?

Milander ruled Hialeah for nearly three decades, despite being briefly ousted by a 1970 corruption conviction. He was later easily reelected.

Said sitting Mayor Carlos Hernandez: ?He was a true Hialeah politician.?

Muscle Mass or Weight Loss

The role of fitness and health supplements or bodybuilding supplements has long been advertised, criticized, glorified, and debated. And yet, many people still agree that most of the pills for muscle growth and weight loss that are available in the market today are worth trying. In the absence of extreme adverse or dangerous effects to the body and our well-being, it is still recommended that such supplements be taken to improve our body?s physical strength and performance. Even if there are many resources available that teaches us the health benefits and use of these supplements, it is still advised that a professional be consulted. Never rely on mere referrals or self-medication.

Stacking Supplements

Stacking means the use of fitness and health supplements or bodybuilding supplements in combination rather than individually. Knowing what supplements work well together will help accelerate one?s fitness goals. It is therefore very important to learn more about the different possible supplement combinations in order to avoid conflicting results or adverse reactions.

Weight Gainers

The key to weight gain is of course eating. One must know what to eat, when to eat and how much of it. Accumulating weight means the calories we take must be more than those calories that we are able to burn. To help us in our goal to bulk up, stacking on bodybuilding supplements is necessary. The most commonly used weight gain supplements are protein supplements, glutamine, weight gainers, and creatine.

Fat Burners

The supplements that help in avoiding fat absorption or burning fat deposits in our body are often filled with L- Carnitine, caffeine and ephedrine, chromium, and yohimbe. They work by releasing the energy from fat, regulate metabolic rate, maintain and control the sugar in our blood at normal and manageable levels, and finally to lower the synthesis of fats in the body.

Basic and Priority Supplements

In order to help maintain healthy muscles in bodybuilding and increase physical strength and boost the immune system, there are recommended bodybuilding supplements that need to be present in your list: whey protein, creatine, fish oil, multivitamins, beta-alanine, arginine, glutamine, thermogenics, and zinc magnesium.

Whey protein is typically available in powder form. It is consumed before working out and afterwards. The amino acids contained in this powder are essential in the building of muscle mass and its rapid growth. It aids in the synthesis of protein in the body.

Creatine is also another type of amino acid which gives the body a source of rapid energy. This is essentially needed to allow strong muscle contractions especially during weight lifting workouts.

Fish oil has the essential omega 3 fatty acids that lower the risk of heart disease, muscle damage, and stroke. It is important to rebuild and repair broken muscle tissues. It also has a role in the body?s weight loss.

Multivitamins are the ones that protect the body from sickness because it helps boost the body?s immune system. It has antioxidants that fight off free radicals. It lowers the risk of cancer and other common infections.

Arginine is also an amino acid that raises the blood flow so that muscles will have a better circulation improving the delivery of oxygen and important food nutrients in the body. It is also instrumental in boosting the body?s level of hormones.

Glutamine is very important to muscle growth, repair and development. It also delays the body fatigue.

There are number of ways to take these supplements according to the user?s desired results. It is important to seek professional help whenever you think of taking such pills. Always remember that these supplements will only be effective when coupled with sufficient exercise and a well-balanced and healthy diet.

How Mature is Your Risk Management? ? HBR | Accounting and ...

June 29, 2012 ? 12:18 PM

Where is your risk management strategy or is it at all??? The article based on E&Y research makes great points.? Do you consider risk management is not the key areas of company growth and revenue ? business goals?? Read on.? I think your strategy may be altered.

Exerpt: In recent research conducted by Ernst & Young, the top finding was that organizations with greater risk management maturity?that is to say, those that do focus on strategic risks and have integrated their various risk management activities?outperform their peers financially. They clearly generate higher growth in revenue, EBITDA, and EBITDA/EV. The finding is a correlation but points to a theory of causation: we believe these companies are far more adept at identifying and mitigating the risks that could undermine their achievement of business goals. At the same time, they are effectively containing financial reporting and compliance risks.

News Corp Officially Announces Plan For Business Split - Deadline ...

The company says that creating separate entities for its publishing and entertainment assets will enable executives to better focus on ?distinct strategic priorities,? respond more quickly to opportunities, and tailor capital structures for their needs. Rupert Murdoch will be chairman of both companies and Chase Carey will be president and COO of the media and entertainment one. No word on who will run publishing, or who will be on each company?s board. ?I am 100% committed to the future of both the publishing and media and entertainment businesses,? Murdoch says. It will take about a year for the separation to take place. Investors would receive one share in the new company for each News Corp share they own. The companies each will have two classes of stock, protecting Murdoch?s voting control. News Corp will convene a special shareholder meeting early next year. It also needs rulings from tax officials to be sure the plan can be done tax-free. More to come soon after the company holds a conference call with analysts. Here?s the News Corp release:

NEW YORK ? JUNE 28, 2012 ? News Corporation (NASDAQ: NWS, NWSA; ASX: NWS, NWSLV) today announced that it intends to pursue the separation of its publishing and media and entertainment businesses into two distinct publicly traded companies. Upon closing of such a transaction, shareholders would hold interests in a world-class publishing company, consisting of the largest collection of best-in-class publishing assets and a new digital education group, and an unmatched global media and entertainment company, each of which would benefit from enhanced strategic alignment and increased operational flexibility with respect to an unparalleled portfolio of assets, brands and franchises.

News Corporation?s Board authorized management to explore this separation after a Board meeting yesterday.

The proposed transaction would create global category leaders in both publishing and entertainment: a publishing company, which would be comprised of News Corporation?s newspapers and information businesses in the U.S., U.K., and Australia, the Company?s leading book publishing brands, its integrated marketing services company, its digital education group, as well as its other assets in Australia; and a global media and entertainment company, which would encompass News Corporation?s broadcast and worldwide cable networks, leading film and television production studios, television stations and highly successful pay-TV businesses in Europe and India.

?There is much work to be done, but our Board and I believe that this new corporate structure we are pursuing would accelerate News Corporation?s businesses to grow to new heights, and enable each company and its divisions to recognize their full potential ? and unlock even greater long-term shareholder value,? said Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation. ?News Corporation?s 60-year heritage of developing world-class media brands has resulted in a large and unparalleled portfolio of diversified assets. We recognize that over the years, News Corporation?s broad collection of assets have become increasingly complex. We determined that creating this new structure would simplify operations and greater align strategic priorities, enabling each company to better deliver on our commitments to consumers across the globe. I am 100 percent committed to the future of both the publishing and media and entertainment businesses and, if the Board ultimately approves a separation, I would serve as Chairman of both companies.?

News Corporation believes that a separation of the businesses into distinct public corporations with their own identities and strategies would enhance overall shareholder value and allow each company to:

? Focus on and pursue distinct strategic priorities and industry-specific opportunities that would maximize their long-term potential.
? Benefit from greater financial and operational flexibility and better position each company to compete.
? Respond and react more quickly to rapidly-evolving technology and global market opportunities.
? Tailor its capital structure, and allocate and deploy resources in a manner consistent with its strategic objectives that best enhances value for its respective shareholder group.

With more focus devoted to each business? financial and operational structure, investors would be able to more clearly evaluate the inherent value of both portfolios of assets and invest in each company accordingly.

The new global media and entertainment company that would be created through the proposed transaction would consist of News Corporation?s highly-profitable cable and television assets, filmed entertainment, and direct satellite broadcasting businesses, including Fox Broadcasting, Twentieth Century Fox Film, Twentieth Century Fox Television, Fox Sports, Fox International Channels, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FX, Star, the National Geographic Channels, Shine Group, Fox Television Stations, BSkyB, Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland, among others. As a pure-play content producer and distributor, the Company would build on its deep heritage in developing incredibly strong, premium content for distribution on screens of all sizes by leveraging its leading content across its entertainment and cable news verticals, as well as its unparalleled collection of regional sports networks, and the industry?s leading movie and TV production and distribution company. In addition, the entertainment company would benefit from its rapidly growing, high-margin cable network and pay-TV assets, and the distribution capabilities and opportunities associated with its unrivaled global footprint with significant scale across North and South America, Europe and Asia.

The new global publishing company that would be created through the proposed transaction would consist of News Corporation?s current publishing businesses, as well as its book publishing, education and integrated marketing services divisions. The new publishing company would create a scaled publishing platform that would be one of the best capitalized in the industry. The publishing company would have the opportunity to leverage its trusted brands for innovation and value creation across all traditional and digital platforms. The publishing company would incorporate some of the world?s most successful print, digital and information services brands including Dow Jones, The Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones Newswires, HarperCollins, The New York Post, and The Daily, as well as offer the rich diversity of assets in Australia, including leading brands such as The Australian, The Herald Sun, The Daily Telegraph and The Courier Mail. In addition, the Company would include The Times, The Sun, The Sunday Times, as well as News Corporation?s integrated marketing services group and its ground-breaking digital education group, including Wireless Generation. With a balanced portfolio of stable and growing news publishing brands and other assets, shareholders would benefit from strong and consistent free cash flow generated by these businesses, over multiple platforms.

Upon closing of the proposed transaction, News Corporation?s shareholders would receive one share of common stock in the new company for each same class News Corporation share currently held. Following the separation, each company would maintain two classes of common stock: Class A Common and Class B Common Voting Shares.

Upon closing of the proposed transaction, Rupert Murdoch would serve as Chairman of both companies and CEO of the media and entertainment company. Chase Carey would serve as President and COO of the media and entertainment company. Over the next several months, the Company will assemble management teams and Boards of Directors for both businesses.

The separation is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months. Management is developing detailed plans for the Board?s further consideration and final approval. To execute the transaction requires further work on structure, management, governance, and other significant matters. After receiving final approval of the Board of Directors, News Corporation will convene a special shareholder meeting to consider the transaction. This meeting is not expected to take place until the first half of calendar 2013. During the closing process, News Corporation will remain focused on delivering the best possible results for the benefit of its consumers, customers and shareholders.

In addition to shareholder approval, the completion of the separation will also be subject to receipt of regulatory approvals, opinions from tax counsel and favorable rulings from certain tax jurisdictions regarding the tax-free nature of the transaction to the Company and to its shareholders, further due diligence as appropriate, and the filing and effectiveness of appropriate filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The Company will provide interim updates as appropriate. There can be no assurances given that the separation of the Company?s businesses as described in this announcement will occur.

Comcast, FCC Agree To Consent Degree on Broadband Service ...

In an unprecedented move, the Federal Communications Commission found that Comcast didn't do enough to live up to one of the merger conditions it imposed when it approved the cable giant's merger with NBC Universal. Namely, it didn't do enough advertising, according to the FCC, and that's costing Comcast $800,000.

At issue was Comcast's commitment to offer standalone broadband Internet services at a reasonable price with sufficient bandwidth to customers that don't subscribe to Comcast's cable services.

Following its investigation, the FCC concluded that Comcast was not adequately marketing the service known as Performance Starter, which Comcast launched in February 2011, one month after the FCC's merger order.??

As part of a consent decree, Comcast agreed to cut an $800,000 check to the U.S. Treasury. Comcast will must also offer the Performance Starter $49.95/month service for an additional year beyond the FCC's original merger order, to at least Feb. 21, 2015.

The action by the FCC is the first consent decree in the agency's history extending a merger condition.

"Today's action demonstrates that compliance with Commission orders is not optional," said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowsi. "The remedies announced today will benefit consumers and foster competition, including from online video and satellite providers, by ensuring that standalone broadband is truly available in Comcast's service areas."

In a statement, Comcast spokeswoman Sena Fitzmaurice said the company was pleased it was able to address the issues cooperatively and constructively. "As is often the case with services associated with government orders, the FCC had questions on how the service might have been rolled out in a different or even better way," she said. "We look forward to continuing to offer and market Performance Starter in additional ways and with additional outlets. We believe this product offers a choice consumers want in the marketplace."

The consent decree with Comcast is the second time the FCC took the cable to task for not living up to its merger conditions. Earlier this year, the FCC ordered Comcast to move Bloomberg TV next to other news channels on its cable lineups.

Not-so-precious: Stripping gold from AFM probes allows better measurement of picoscale forces

Not-so-precious: Stripping gold from AFM probes allows better measurement of picoscale forces [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Jun-2012

Gold is not necessarily preciousat least not as a coating on atomic force microscope (AFM) probes.

JILA researchers found that removing an AFM probe's gold coatinguntil now considered helpfulgreatly improved force measurements performed in a liquid, the medium favored for biophysical studies such as stretching DNA or unfolding proteins. As described in Nano Letters,* stripping the gold from the diving-board-shaped probe, or cantilever, with a brief chemical bath improved the precision and stability of force measurements about 10-fold. The advance is expected to quickly and broadly benefit the fields of biophysics and nanoscience.

JILA is a joint institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder.

"What I find interesting about this experiment is it's so incredibly simple. It takes a minute to strip the gold off a commercial cantilever and you get a 10-fold improvement in force precision," says NIST/JILA physicist Thomas Perkins.

To measure forces at the molecular scale, an AFM's cantilever attaches to a molecule with its pointed end and pulls; the resulting deflection of the cantilever is measured. The forces are in the realm of piconewtons (pN), or trillionths of a newton. A unit of force, one newton is roughly the weight of a small apple.

Cantilevers are typically made of silicon or silicon nitride and coated with gold on both sides to reflect light. Perkins discovered the gold coating was a problem while his research group was probing the folding and unfolding of protein molecules over time periods of seconds to minutes. The group previously improved AFM position stability** and holds a related patent,*** but then discovered that the force was drifting. "It's counterintuitive," says Perkins. "Everyone has assumed you needed gold for the enhanced reflectivity, when in fact, gold is clearly the dominant source of force drift on short and long time scales."

"Gold exhibits a sort of complex elastic property in high-precision measurements," Perkins explains. "When you bend gold, it creeps a little bit, like silly putty. Further, the lore in the field is that gold can crack, it can age, and molecules can bind to itall of which may change its mechanical properties. This problem is even worse when you do biological experiments in liquid."

AFM force measurements in liquid typically have had precision (error range) of plus or minus 5 to 10 pN. By stripping the gold JILA researchers reduced the error by 10 times, to about 0.5 pN for measurements on both short and long timescales. Researchers can now precisely measure fast processes, such as proteins folding and unfolding 50 times per second, over long time periods of several minutes. Significantly, the results were achieved with commercially available microscopes and cantilevers, so the practical benefits can be applied quickly for any AFM force measurements and imaging. AFM can now compete with optical traps and magnetic tweezers in terms of sensitivity.

Clinton hopeful Syria meeting can be turning point

HELSINKI (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday she has "great hope" that an upcoming Geneva meeting of world powers can be a turning point in the Syria crisis. Clinton said the U.S. supports U.N. envoy Kofi Annan's plan for political transition in Syria.

Annan "has developed his own very concrete road map for political transition" from the Assad regime, Clinton said at a news conference at the start of her three-country European tour. "We believe it embodies the principles needed for any political transition in Syria that could lead to a peaceful, democratic and representative outcome reflecting the will of the Syrian people."

The violence in Syria has worsened since a cease-fire deal in April, and the bloodshed appears to be taking on more dangerous, sectarian overtones, the U.N. said Wednesday. The U.N.'s deputy envoy for Syria, Jean-Marie Guehenno, told the U.N. Human Rights Council that the violence in Syria has "reached or even surpassed" levels seen before the April 12 ceasefire agreement and that Annan's six-point peace plan "is clearly not being implemented."

Reflecting the sense of urgency, senior diplomats said world powers plan to meet Saturday in Geneva to try to end the bloodshed. Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will be joined by diplomats from U.N. Security Council nations and possibly neighbors of Syria, the diplomats said. Clinton has not officially confirmed that she will attend the meeting, but said she is "keeping my calendar open."

Clinton said she had "great hope" the meeting can be "a turning point in the very tragic circumstances affecting the Syrian people at this time."

Syrian President Bashar Assad "has relied on the support of Russia and China in the Security Council to prevent the international community from taking unified action," Clinton said. Russia and China, two of the Security Council's five permanent members, have twice shielded Syria from U.N. sanctions.

"If Kofi Annan is able to lay down a political transition road map that is endorsed by countries including Russia and China, for example, that sends a very different message," Clinton said. "That's the first time the international community will have really evidenced a direction that I think Assad will have to respond to."

"If he is able to get people there who up until now have either been on the sidelines or actively supporting or protecting the Assad regime, then that gives heart to the opposition. It also disheartens a lot of the regime insiders," she said.

Dance Rants: Sunscreen - Life Fitness Academy

With the encouragement of the media, sunscreen use is a common, everyday occurrence. According to most people, if you don?t wear it, you are destined to get skin cancer. I wonder why so many people still get skin cancer when sunscreen is so prevalent. I also wonder what people have been doing for hundreds of years working outside much longer hours than we do now, and not shriveling up. They certainly weren?t wearing SPF 95.

The first problem with most sunscreens is that they only protect against UVB rays. UVB are the ones that turn skin red, but UVA rays go much deeper and cause premature aging, sagging skin and wrinkling. Sunscreens do nothing about those. There are no visual cues like red skin to let you know the damage that has been caused by UVA rays with or without sunscreen. Furthermore, the UVB rays are from what your body synthesizes vitamin D. You can acquire all the vitamin D you need from the sun. Vitamin D regulates the body?s concentration of calcium and phosphorous, which is related to bone health. Vitamin D is as essential as vitamin C to the immune system and has been used to treat cancer. It decreases the risk for diseases like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, hypertension and certain cancers. Vitamin D is most easily used in the form of D3, which is what comes from the sun. People that apply sunscreen everyday can actually become vitamin D deficient. Truthfully, most people get it in food too, so they may not experience deficiency symptoms other than being tired, cranky and more susceptible to other illnesses.

Toxic chemicals used to create sunscreen are the next problem. Your skin is your largest organ and absorbs a lot more than you?d think. Think about medications or supplements that are patches worn on the skin. Some sources say that medication absorbed through the skin are up to 95% more effective than those taken orally. This is because chemicals bypass the digestive system and are delivered directly into the blood stream. Many of the chemicals used are known carcinogens and hormone disrupters. This means they cause free radicals (damage on a cellular level: cancer-causing) and some have estrogenic actions that may interfere with reproductive development. Many sunscreens use a form of vitamin A thought to help with anti-aging, but studies show in the presence of sunlight, it can actually cause cancer. It is usually in the form of retinyl palmitate. The main hormone disruptor is oxybenzone. Quite a few other toxic chemicals are present in most sunscreens. Dr Josh Axe lists these other chemicals as toxic in addition: Octinoxate, padimate O, octisilate, avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, ensulizole, methyl antrhanilate, methoryl SX, sulisobenzone, and cinoxate.

As of December 2012 the FDA will no longer allow sunscreen companies to label their product with claims of ?water-proof,? ?sweat-proof? and ?sunblock.? This was supposed to happen in May, but the FDA granted them an additional six months to comply (conveniently after sunscreen season). This is the first major attempt to regulate sunscreen in about thirty-five years.

Of course the best thing to do would be to stay outside only as long as you can without burning, sans sunscreen, while getting your vitamin D for the day. Unfortunately that is not always possible. When you?re going to be out there for an extended period of time, get a good sunscreen. For light exposure you can start with something like coconut oil which is excellent for your skin and a much better alternative to commercial sunscreens. Being that coconut oil has an SPF of 2-4, it does offer some protection and will only give health to your body. For stronger protection when you must have it, there are a couple things to consider. Zinc Oxide is the only FDA approved sunscreen for children under six months of age. It leaves a white residue on skin, so some companies are altering it, using smaller particles called nano zinc oxide, which is a no-no, too. Titanium oxide appears to be an alternative that is somewhat safer than what is used in most sunscreens. There are actually quite a few sunscreens that are of a higher quality. Here at Life Fitness Academy, I?ve seen Aubrey?s organic sunscreen floating around and from some research I?ve done recently, it seems a brand called Kabana is an excellent one. The EWG (environmental working group) has a wonderful website that explains in further detail many chemicals, effects and best brands of sunscreen.

Again, as always, your best bet is going without manufactured products being put on your skin!

Shuffle Master, IGT, Bally and WMS ink online gambling deals

Casinos were hard hit during the financial downturn, putting pressure on their gaming machine and equipment suppliers. A flurry of deals suggests game suppliers are looking to reduce their exposure to brick and mortar casinos by tapping into online gambling.

Shuffle Master sells and leases poker card shuffling machines. As Howard Stutz?noted, the company posted healthy revenues last quarter. But Shuffle Master?s future growth may come from dealing virtual cards. In March, the company agreed to acquire the European online poker software company Ongame Network.

This month, Shuffle Master and gaming equipment maker Bally Technologies inked a deal to have Ongame?s poker network operate on Bally?s iGaming platform. On June 21,?Bally was granted final approval for one of?Nevada?s new interactive gambling licenses.

In May, gaming equipment supplier International Game Technologies (IGT) (think Wheel of Fortune) tendered an offer to pick up Sweden?s online poker network provider Entraction. One month later, IGT was another recipient of a Nevada online gaming license.

WMS, the manufacturer of Wizard of Oz and Reel?Em In,?recently acquired Swedish online casino company Jadestone and the social online casino game provider Phantom EFX. WMS has secured preliminary approval from the Nevada State Gaming Control Board for an interactive gambling license.

The Suniverse: Friendship vs Relationship: The Smackdown

Let's be friends!

If only it were that easy.

I know that everyone talks about how hard it is to make friends, particularly in real life, and that's because it is.? It's spectacularly hard.? I have three people I'm cruising right now to be friends with, and a fourth as a possibility, but who knows if any of them will work out?

I mean, how much easier was it to make friends when you were in school - "You like grape jelly? I like grape jelly! Let's be friends!" - or when you were in college - "You like free beer? I like free beer! Let's be friends!" - or when . . . yeah, I think that's pretty much when you had your options for making friends.? I mean, if you have kids, you can make friends with the moms of your kid's friends, and if you work outside the home, you can make friends with your work buddies, but I've always found that pretty hit or miss.?

My starting a friendship relationship moves are in various stages right now with my four potential candidates, and I've got to remind myself not to just spastically start inviting someone to my house to watch Gilmore Girls or 30 Rock [except you're all invited, of course, because we're beyond that awkward beginning stage and into the real relationship where I can ask you if I should dye my hair redder and you will TOTALLY TELL ME THE HONEST ANSWER.? Also, we can talk about nail polish and bitch about our partners. FUN!] because that kind of shit? Will not make me a friend and will be discussed like a potential date's penis size - meaning not in a good way, but with horrific accuracy.?

It's hard to put yourself out there and ask someone to be your friend - to be in a real relationship with you and to be a part of your life.? Sure, you can bitch about sitting around with nothing to do, but it's a long leap from that kind of bitching to asking someone if they want to go do something with you.? Because if you do, and they don't? GAH. THE HORROR.? Then you have to pretend that it's ALL FINE, YOU WERE JUST ASKING, YOU KNOW? NO BIG!

It's worse than having a romantic relationship, because with a romantic relationship, if you tell someone you want to be with them, they either want to be with you or they don't [meaning they want to have sex with you or they don't - let's not kid ourselves, a great personality and a sterling credit record are nothing to be sneezed at, but you know and I know that if there's no interest in seeing that other person up close and naked, that relationship is not going far.? And let's also not kid ourselves, we know how far it's going to go from about 3.2 seconds in.].?

In a friendship relationship, it's far trickier.? I mean, if your potential friend looks like Salma Hayek, sure you'd want to see her naked.? Who wouldn't?? But in general, this relationship is more about the personality, and THAT is a harder road to navigate.? Because you can totally make out with someone for about 20 minutes and then decide it's not going to work, and you have a valid excuse ["I'm sorry, it's not you, it's me" or the ever popular "I'm sorry, I think I just got my period"], but if you hang out with someone for about 20 minutes - once you're able to finagle your way in - you still aren't sure if you've got something to build a relationship on.? You invest a lot more time in making a friendship relationship than you do a romantic relationship.?

I'd like to think that cool, fun and awesome people like us would easily make and maintain these kinds of relationships, but I think the gods mock us.? I think they know how important a good, solid friendship relationship can be, and so they make it harder to get and maintain them, so that we know that we should be thankful and cherish them.

Jerks.

Generation X Estate Planning

MoneyIt is important to remember that estate planning is not just for the elderly or those who are wealthy. Any person could benefit from taking the time to establish a plan should that person become incapacitated?or die prematurely, especially if that person has children. What most people probably do not understand is that estate planning does not have to be a complicated process. In fact, most members of generation X will probably only need a few basic documents, such as a will, trust, power of attorney, and a health care proxy.

A will is needed because it provides an overview of how a person wants his or her property distributed at death. Wills are also important because a person can nominate a person to become a guardian for his or her children within a will. A person could also create a revocable trust if a person does want to draft a will. A trust is a relationship that is established by a trust instrument, and it holds assets for a person's benefit while that person is alive. In addition, a trust can be established to distribute assets to a designated person after the settlor, the person who established the trust, or a beneficiary dies. Unlike a will, the property within the trust will not pass through the probate process. A health care proxy is important because it establishes what person the creator wants to make health care decisions should that person become unable to make those decisions for themselves. A power of attorney is important because it establishes the person that the creator of the instrument wants to make financial decision on his or her behalf should that person become incapacitated.

Teen lesbian couple shot in Texas park

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Police are investing the shooting of two teenage girls in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

Two teenage girls in a relationship were found with gunshot wounds to the head in a south Texas park, with one of them dying from her injuries, media reports say. Police were searching for the gunman.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday, said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who confirmed to msnbc.com details first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

Olgin, originally from Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to a hospital where she had surgery and was in serious but stable condition on Sunday, local NBC affiliate kristv.com reported. Wright said Chapa was still in the hospital on Monday.

Friends told local NBC affiliate, kristv.com, that the girls had been together five months. Wright said he didn?t have any information about their relationship, noting that ?we understood from their friends that they were (in a romantic relationship). I know from ? Mollie?s parents that they were very close.?

When asked if police had been able to determine if the girls' sexuality played any role in the shootings, Wright told msnbc.com: ?That?s always something that we?re looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.?

He said they had been in communication with Chapa. He noted all indications were that ?third parties? were involved in the assault.

?If we had a name, you know, we?d be having a different conversation right now. But we have not been able to gather enough information to identify a suspect yet,? he said. ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, but they haven?t found the weapon. A resident living nearby reported hearing two loud bangs Friday before midnight but believed?they were?from firecrackers, the newspaper said.

The park, more of nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was generally frequented by visitors during the day. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

?We?re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,? he said of the girls. ?It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline and that?s where they found.?

Friends of the girls gathered at a local high school on Sunday. Olgin's roommate, Samantha Garrett, told kristv.com that the fun-loving couple hadn?t gotten any negative responses to their relationship and could not think of why anyone would want to harm them.

The crime rate is low in Portland, a bedroom community of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

Cash rules at Romney retreat while Condoleezza Rice steals the show

PARK CITY, Utah - If the majority of donors who attend this weekend's gathering of hundreds of high dollar fundraisers go back home as fired up as Rodger Young, the Romney campaign will be in quite strong a financial position and the investment in time and effort for the event will be paid back many times over.

"I am going to bundle every penny I can bundle," said Young, a donor at this weekend's mixer for Romney donors, GOP stars, and Republican leaders.

Until this weekend, Young was merely a donor not a bundler, but that has now changed.

"I came here with the idea that we were all going to take on more financial responsibility and I am certainly prepared to do that for Gov. Romney and I think we can get this done," Young told ABC News.

Hundreds of high dollar fundraisers turned out this weekend for a mixer for Romney campaign donors, GOP stars and Republican leaders, but among the faces at the retreat were other attendees who have the same goals of defeating Barack Obama, but whose roles in Republican politics lie in super PACs.

A man in a dark suit and purple pocket square was camped out in the lobby of the Chateaux at Silver Lake talking to what appeared to be lanyard-wearing donors. The man was Charlie Spies, the founder of the Mitt Romney-backing super PAC Restore Our Future.

He wasn't attending any of the panels or discussions and didn't even want to go into get a cup of coffee, but the lobby is really the place to be, with attendees walking to and from meetings or gathering to talk.

Reporters were asked to leave the lobby after being spotted chatting with Sen. John Thune and his wife about Friday's reception at Olympic Park, as well as with Florida Rep. Connie Mack.

It's legal for Spies to be there, but "coordination" with the candidate is not, a rule that's hard to enforce and explain.

He pleasantly wouldn't answer questions about the propriety of him hobnobbing at the Romney Victory Leadership Retreat, but he said, "Romney supporters are energized."

"People here understand that the private sector is not doing fine and we need a president who understands how to create jobs and turn the economy around," Spies told ABC News.

The Romney campaign did not immediately respond to an evening request for comment about ROF staff being at the retreat.

But Spies wasn't the only person affiliated with a GOP superPAC attending the confab.

Karl Rove, founder of American Crossroads and a former Bush strategist, was also on hand. He spoke on a "media insight" panel, and on another one examining Romney's path to victory. Rove, dressed in a blue blazer, told reporters his panel was "damn good," before whizzing away on a golf cart.

Attendees said the panel was engaging and humorous, with Rove swearing up a storm and regaling the crowd with funny stories.

Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz told reporters both Rove and GOP strategist Mary Matalin were making the crowd howl, telling them about when Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a friend with bird-shot pellets on a hunting trip.

"He was on full display," Chaffetz said of Rove.

It wasn't all joking, though. According to Young and his wife, Rove said, "We had to focus on some particular groups, such as some Republicans that didn't vote in the last election," including focusing on women. It's unclear whether Rove was also soliciting donations as he mingled with attendees over the weekend.

Many of those same attendees said the star speaker of the weekend was former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who received and a standing ovation. Ambassador Charles Cobb, who served as ambassador to Iceland from 1989 to 1992, said Rice was "spectacular" and described her as a "very bright, sophisticated, articulate lady."

Husband-and-wife donors from Los Angeles who did not want to be identified said Rice's message was one of "America needing to take charge."

"We can't stand by and let things happen," the wife said. "If we do, someone else will take that leadership role."

They both described her address as an "impassioned plea" for the country to "stand up and take charge."

Donor Kent Lucken, an international banker in Boston who moved back to his home state of Iowa for six weeks before the caucuses to help Romney, said "she rocked it."

Attendees also heard from Sen. John McCain, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and many other GOP notables. The donors were also able to learn about what Chaffetz described as how "the Romney train runs on time."

The attendees got to hear from the Romney senior staff, including campaign manager Matt Rhoades, senior strategist Stuart Stevens, and longtime adviser Beth Myers who is heading up the vice presidential selection process. They described the campaign's "10 a.m. meeting," according to Chaffetz and several donors.

"I think people were fascinated by that," Chaffetz said. "They spent a good half hour showing them how they would do that, and what they would talk about and how they review the numbers and talk about messaging and develop that into a cohesive message that's not only earned media but also paid media and other types of things. That was really different than I think that most people thought."

Chaffetz added that they went through "the analysis of what's going on in the media, looking at polling, looking at all the different facets."

Another thing many attendees weren't expecting? How up-close and personal they would get with many of the stars of the party. Chaffetz pointed out that he saw many donors excitedly taking their photo with possible vice presidential choices.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan were all on hand.

Larry Conti who came with his friend, a bundler from Los Angeles, as his plus-one describes himself as "a big Paul Ryan fan" and was thrilled to meet him. Conti thought he would impress his friend when he took a photo with Ryan, who introduced himself to him as "Paul," but instead the friend told him he had just spent 10 minutes talking to Ryan in the bathroom.

Eugene Atkinson, a bundler from New York City, said he thanked House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and turned away only to have Cantor come back to him and ask him, "So how many years were you at Goldman Sachs?"

Atkinson spent almost 20 years at the bank (he is now the founder and managing director of Atkinson Capital), and Cantor's wife used to work there.

And it's also what these donors are leaving with, not just an enthusiasm to raise more money, as Young mentioned, but the impression that their guy is going to win.

Before he zoomed off in a golf cart with former Secretary of State James Baker, former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, who will also head up Romney's transition if he is elected, said he came away from the panels with confidence that the Romney campaign has "a very impressive group of people supporting this campaign and we have a very good shot at winning."

But with just under four months to go until election day, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus acted as a voice of reason for a campaign that is currently on top of the world.

"Everyone thinks we couldn't be doing better. We are clicking on all cylinders. We couldn't be raising more money, but it's June," Priebus said. "On our best day it will be close."

NCAA: 6-man San Beda stuns Arellano

By Mark Giongco
INQUIRER.net

MANILA, Philippines?Six-man San Beda shocked Arellano, 81-71, Sunday in the men?s basketball tournament of the NCAA Season 88 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Yvan Ludovice, who played all 40 minutes, and Arthur de la Cruz led the Red Lions with 18 points each.

?It was all about heart,? awed San Beda head coach Ronnie Magsanoc said. ?It was a huge challenge that they were able to overcome.?

Nine of San Beda?s players were suspended due to an off-season incident.

The Red Lions trailed early in the game as the Chiefs shot lights out from three with 10-of-17 shooting in the first half.

Despite that, San Beda kept within striking distance and turned things around in the third quarter sparked by De la Cruz and timely baskets by Jon Villaruz for a 63-54 gap heading into the final period.

Arellano pulled to within five thrice after San Beda rolled to a 58-46 advantage on a Dave Moralde floater.

Francis Abarcar, whom Magsanoc revealed as only a late addition to the team, fired all of his points in the payoff period.

Rocky Acidre and Jon Pinto scored 16 points apiece for the Chiefs.

Arellano hit 10 triples in the first half but missed all of its 10 attempts in the second half.

San Beda pulled through even with just five players as lone big man Antonio Bonsubre fouled out with still 7:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Jim McTague | Voters Won?t be Fooled by Obama?s Slick Rhetoric on Oil

President Obama?s oil politics are changing ? again. He?s scraping off his anti-oil war bonnet in advance of the election and taking credit at every campaign whistle-stop for increased U.S. oil and gas production, even though most of the drilling is occurring on private, not federal, land. The reason for Obama?s about-face is that the election is shaping up to be close. Since the public largely favors exploiting all of our domestic gas and oil resources, on and off shore, Obama feels he must lip-sync a version ?drill, baby, drill.?

A few voters might be fooled by the president?s rapid lane change, but investors remain unimpressed. His change of tone hasn?t affected energy-stock prices. In fact, Obama?s energy shape-shifting never has had a measurable impact on investors. On the first trading day following the President?s vilification of big oil in his Jan. 25, 2011, State of the Union Address, the Energy Select Sector SPDR (ticker: XLE) closed at $71.84, up $1.68. On April 17, 2012, following his remarks in the Rose Garden that insinuated shady commodity traders were manipulating petroleum prices, the XLE closed at $69.35, up $1.11 cents.

ONE POLITICAL CHANGE THAT might make a significant difference for the energy sector, however, would be Obama?s defeat. Investors who believe that will happen should begin wading into the sector now. Obama might already have lost the White House for failing to deliver his promised turnaround in the economy. Many voters view his stimulus as a flop. They object to the government?s rewriting of health-care policy. They perceive Obama to be a job-killer, not a job creator, for backing speculative green-energy ventures run by his supporters and obstructing the creation of tangible jobs by not supporting energy projects like the Keystone Pipeline from Canada and drilling off of our coasts. Many voters were angry about all of this in 2010 and, according to most polls, after two years they remain angry.

Oil and gas executives aren?t assuaged by the president?s recent public turnabout. His administration in their view remains a costly bottleneck to the exploration and development of new fields off of our coastlines, in Alaska, and on federally owned lands in the west. Obama also wants to hike industry taxes significantly, in part to reduce the pricing advantage of? petroleum fuels over renewable energy.
