(AP) ? The alchemy was off at the house of Mugler, where Lady Gaga's stylist, Nicola Formichetti, again failed to live up to his reputation as a sort of Generation Y Midas who turns everything he touches into gold.

Formichetti's second effort as Mugler creative director fizzled Wednesday, as the label fielded a less-than-convincing spring-summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection of willfully wacky sci-fi garb in neutral shades. It was as if the show, which garnered only a tepid round of applause before fashion insiders fled into the hot Paris night, had been tailor-made to drive home a crucial point: That buzz does not a fashion house make.

No one knows that better than Dries Van Noten, the modest and affable Belgian designer who, working quietly over the past quarter century, has built an empire on the quality of his clothes alone. Van Noten delivered another tour de force Wednesday, with a collection of sculptural skirts and jackets printed with cityscapes by night.

It looked as if Damir Doma were following in Van Noten's footsteps, not aesthetically ? the designers have radically different visions ? but by allowing his clothes to mature naturally and to speak for themselves.

Rochas' Marco Zanini held fast to his chaste vision of early 1960-era glamour with a slight patina of nerdiness, and big, bold retro-futuristic glamour was in the air at Brazilian wunderkind Pedro Lourenco's polished show.

Zippers to nowhere embellished the peppy sportswear numbers from Portugal's Felipe Oliveira Baptista, and models were encased in cages and plastic masks at the day's most disturbing display, by soft-spoken British bad boy Gareth Pugh.

Paris' nine-day-long ready-to-wear extravaganza moves into day three on Thursday with shows by California-born designer Rick Owens, coveted Paris label Balmain and Indian madcap Manish Arora.

DRIES VAN NOTEN

Romantic, boulder-strewn landscapes and anonymous cityscapes ? their neon lights shining in the dark ? were the dreamscapes of Van Noten's haunting spring-summer collection.

The Belgian critical darling projected these topos onto the ladylike shapes of 1950s-era couture, sending out classic bell-shaped shirts and ample cocoon coats illuminated by urban lights or covered in dramatic black and white etchings of mountains and waterfalls.

Suddenly, the mothball-laden retro air that clings to these shapes evaporated, replaced by a crisp, of-the-moment freshness.

These were the kind of clothes that you would never suspect you could want, but once you see them, you can think of nothing else.

MUGLER

Whether he dresses her in meat or swathes her in a gown made entirely out of stuffed animals, Formichetti can do no wrong when it comes to outfitting Lady Gaga. But at his day job as Mugler creative director, the stylist has yet to hit on the winning formula.

After his widely panned debut at Mugler last season with a collection that was all about plastic pants and other garments normally sold at sex shops, Formichetti was back Wednesday with a radically different ? but no more successful ? approach to spring-summer 2012.

Gone were the bustier dresses in transparent latex, replaced by what could only be described as the wardrobe of a sophisticated Trekkie with a penchant for demure neutral shades. Taupe catsuits were riddled with oblong cutouts, and futuristic pointy-shouldered jackets in camel were hung with a complicated web of useless bands.

A step up from last season? Undoubtedly.

But did it feel like Mugler? Sadly, no.

Relaunching a storied fashion house is no easy task, particularly with a label with as strong an identity as that of Mugler. But it increasingly feels like Formichetti and the brand's ready-to-wear designer, Sebastien Peigne, are grasping at straws, trying to come up with an outrageous new look that can become the brands new identity instead of finding a way to update its historical legacy.

The label continues to be oriented away from its past and its rich archive and focused nearly exclusively on its new muse, Lady Gaga, the trump card that Formichetti pulls out again and again.

Though not present in the flesh as she was last season ? when she walked the catwalk in a sheer black tip and painted-on pencil skirt ? the pop sensation was there in spirit on Wednesday night: The show opened with a video showing the singer, fitted out with two glow-in-the-dark buck teeth, praising Mugler.

But having a video of the world's biggest star is simply not the same thing as seeing strut her stuff on the catwalk, and the show fell flat even before it started.

GARETH PUGH

If Yves Saint Laurent was widely hailed as a feminist for freeing women from pinching bustiers and nip-waisted dresses, what does that make Pugh, who sent models out in convict stripes, leather cages and head-englobing plastic tears?

Pugh's artistry is easy enough to appreciate: From a purely aesthetic point of view, his abbreviated sheath dresses made out of vertical strips of black or white leather were indisputably beautiful.

But as clothing, meant to be worn by women, there was something deeply disturbing about the cage garments ? particularly when fitted with matching cage muzzles, as they were at Wednesday's ready-to-wear show. Beyond the jarring antifeminist context, the clothes were simply too rigid to be anything more than statement pieces for women determined to make a big entrance.

Pugh's misogynistic message didn't end there, though. The show's finale saw models clad in layers of gleaming gray robes and jackets that looked as if they'd been fished out of an oil spill, their heads completely encased in elongated plastic masks.

If the caged girls were barely able to move, these poor models looked as if they were hard-pressed even to breathe.

ROCHAS

"Mad Men" has been off the air for months, but Rochas' Zanini is betting on the enduring popularity of the ladylike retro styles the hit show helped to relaunch.

For spring-summer, Zanini delivered sober sheath dresses and demure V-necked gowns with full skirts and skinny belts in ivory, powder pink and seafoam green that felt like they'd been plucked straight out of the first two seasons of the AMC series.

With its modest lines, Wednesday's collection was more demure housewife than va-va-voom secretary, or in "Mad Men" terms, more Betty Draper than Joan Holloway. You could almost picture the sullen Ms. Draper skulking around her kitchen in one of the poof-skirted shirtdresses.

A certain frigidity infused the whole collection: Taupe pencil skirts were worn with plain-fronted blazers that stood stiffly out from the models' bodies, and knit sweaters and skirts shot with Lurex had a prudish bulkiness about them.

The models' hairdos ? towering beehives topped off with organza handkerchiefs ? did nothing to ramp up the sexiness factor, nor did the eyewear, pointy hornrim glasses.

Still, not all clothes have to ooze sex appeal, and Zanini's sober, almost nerdy, styles have plenty of other attributes to recommend them.

DAMIR DOMA

Like a stone tumbled and polished into a gleaming gem, Doma buffed his signature raw, hermetic aesthetic until it shone with understated sophistication.

For spring-summer, the Croatian-born, German-raised designer delivered Wednesday simple-lined dresses in supple washed silks, their raw edges embellished with flashes of hammered gold hardware.

The heavy raw fabrics and bulky shapes that Doma has built his name on were still there, but in more refined incarnations, as if he'd taken a buffer to his signature stone-hewn silhouettes.

And whereas his previous collections have felt earthy ? their nubby fabrics heavy and almost loamy ? Wednesday's collection was more connected to the air.

Whisper-light trench coats that billowed like capes were worn over shorts in gleaming gold lace, and square-cut pillowcase dresses were fitted out with panels like floating tails.

Doma also branched out from his usual palette of somber shades and neutral tones, delivering fetching pairings of navy and ocher that were themselves a breath of fresh air.

It was another strong showing from one of Paris' most unique new talents.

PEDRO LOURENCO

With a spring-summer collection that seemed drawn from the same well of retro-futuristic cool as the ne plus ultra of Paris labels, Balenciaga, Lourenco underscored his status as one to watch.

Lourenco, a Brazilian who was just 19 years old when he made his impressive Paris debut a year and a half ago, ratcheted it up a notch with Wednesday's collection of colorblocked dresses and low-slung skirts and cropped trousers that couldn't have been cooler if they'd tried.

A-line skirts hung with long leather fringe, like straw, were paired sheer tank tops and punctuated at the waist by oversized rectangular panels in shiny silver lurex. Sleeveless vests with sculptural collars were worn with oatmeal-colored pants that had just the right dose of slouch.

Though Lourenco's collection felt fresh, the sweet spot he hit between a kind of hokey but appealing retro look and something sleek and futuristic was not uncharted territory: Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere has been mining it for seasons.

Still, there are worse things than winning comparisons with Paris' hottest label.

Early use of non-parental childcare is not harmful for most children, Norwegian study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2011) ? What type of childcare arrangements do parents choose before their children are 18 months old? Does the choice of childcare affect children's language skills and mental health at the age of five?

These are some of the questions that are explored in a new report prepared by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health as part of a collaborative project with the Ministry of Education and Research. The report indicates that there is no evidence that early centre-based childcare is harmful for most children.

Most pre-school children in Norway attend different types of childcare arrangements on a daily or weekly basis, and by far the majority are in centre-based childcare (kindergarten). In contrast to most other countries, children with physical and/or mental disabilities are not separated from the other children, but attend regular groups or classes in public kindergartens and schools.

Childcare is an important arena for language development and learning and for preventing and coping with mental health issues, regardless of the child's functional level. Because most children in Norway participate in childcare we have opportunities to learn about what the best arrangements are for learning, as well as how best to cope with daily challenges for children with different levels of functioning. The significance of different types of childcare for children's development is frequently discussed in many research groups as well as in the preschool education sector.

The aim of this report "Barnepass fram til 18 m?neder. Sammenhenger mellom barnepass fram til 18 m?neder og spr?klige ferdigheter og psykisk fungering ved fem ?r" (English: Childcare up to 18 months. Relations between child care up to 18 months and language skills and mental function at five years) has been to provide more knowledge about the use of different childcare arrangements and how they affect children's functioning as well as the impact of starting in childcare at an early age.

The report provides an overview of the current status and is based on data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. The first part of the report presents information about childcare arrangements based on questionnaire data from more than 60 000 children in MoBa aged 18 months, in the period between 2001 and the end of 2009. Then impact of childcare (up to 18 months of age) was studied in the context of language skills, language-related difficulties and psychological function in 13 000 children who had reached five years by the end of 2010.

What works for whom?

Overall, the report shows that neither the language skills nor the psychological function of most children varies with the type of childcare, their age when starting in childcare outside the home, whether they used a combination of childcare arrangements or just one type, or how many hours per week they were in childcare.

"For most children there is no evidence from our findings to suggest that it is harmful to begin in centre-based childcare at 12 months," said Synnve Schj?lberg, researcher and specialist in clinical psychology. "The small effect sizes of the findings indicate that the differences between children attending childcare at an early age and those starting later have no clinical implications for most children" she explains.

"Neither do the findings suggest that most children who are cared for at home up to 18 months of age are better prepared than children cared for by others in the same period," said Schj?lberg.

"It is possible that the small differences found could be attributed to some children's particular vulnerability. Low quality childcare could be hypothesised as another explanation," said Schj?lberg. "We will investigate these relationships further. The debate around centre-based childcare needs to be more nuanced and now rather focus on what works for whom" she added.

Main findings

The report is only available in Norwegian but here is a summary of the main findings:

  1. The majority of children cared for outside the home before they are 18 months were in centre-based childcare. A larger proportion of children were in non-maternal care outside the home in 2009 relative to previous years. Although most children are cared for at home until they are 10-12 months old, with increasing age there is an increase in the number of children who are cared for outside of their home. Across year of data collection, and thus coverage of child-care centres, we found that 40 per cent of 18 month old children attended centre based childcare, while one in four children (26 per cent) are with a nanny/family-based care. In 2008 and 2009 we found that 59 per cent of the children attended centre-based childcare at 18 months, while 15 per cent were with a nanny/family-based care.
  2. The number of hours children are in child care outside the home at 18 months increases. In the interval between 2001 and 2009, most of the 18 month old children (63 per cent) were in childcare between 25 to 40 hours per week. The average number of hours children were cared for by others increased from 27 hours for children who were 18 months old between 2001 and 2003 to 31 hours for children who were 18 months old between 2007 and 2009.
  3. Approximately half of five year olds attend public childcare centres. 98 per cent of the five year olds participating in MoBa attend centre-based childcare. Approximately half of the children (52 per cent) attend public childcare centres while a slightly smaller proportion (45 per cent) attends privately run childcare centres.
  4. Choice of childcare is related to the length of mothers' education. A smaller proportion of 18-month-old children were cared for at home in 2009 relative to 2003. The most substantial change across time was found among mothers without any completed higher education. In 2003, 40 per cent of mothers with low levels of education utilised non-maternal care outside home, whereas this number had increased to 63 per cent in 2009. Relative to mothers with higher education, a larger proportion of mothers with lower education levels care for their children at home until 18 months (50 per cent vs. 14 per cent). Child-minder / family-based childcare were found to be more often used by mothers who did not have higher education.
  5. Children of parents with a non-Norwegian mother tongue begin care outside the home later than children of two Norwegian speaking parents. At 18 months of age, 74 per cent of the children with two Norwegian speaking parents were cared for outside the home whereas 65 per cent of children from families where neither parent has Norwegian as their mother tongue were cared for outside the home.
  6. Girls who attend child care outside the home from 12 months are not negatively affected in language development or language related problems. The same holds true for girls being cared for in different types of child care. There are no advantages in the girls' language development to being cared for at home in the first 18 months compared to being in childcare at an earlier age.
  7. Boys who attend child care outside the home are rated as having slightly higher score on language related difficulties at five years relative to those who were cared for at home until 18 months. The effect size is small. Being cared for in childcare before 18 months only explains about one per mille (?) of the variation in language-related difficulties at five years. Thus, the difference between the two groups is not of clinical significance for most of the boys.
  8. Boys who began in childcare outside the home before 18 months are rated with slightly higher scores on behavioural symptoms at five years relative to those who were cared for at home until 18 months. The effect sizes are small. Childcare experience only explains about one per mille (?) of the variation in behavioural symptoms and is thus not likely to be of clinical significance.
  9. Children who are cared for more than 40 hours a week outside the home are rated with slightly more behavioural symptoms at five years of age. Both girls and boys who were cared for outside the home for 40 hours or more per week at 18 months were found to have slightly more behavioural problems at five years of age relative to children who were cared for less than 40 hours per week outside the home at 18 months. The effect sizes are small. The difference in childcare experience only explains about 1.2 per mille (?) of the variation in behavioural symptoms and thus for most of the children is not of clinical significance.
  10. There is no association between childcare history and emotional problems at five years. Independent of the age when children start with care outside the home, neither girls nor boys who were cared for by others were found to be more anxious or sad than those who are cared for at home.
  11. Many children have documented developmental difficulties or increased risk for developing such difficulties already during the first year of life. When the children reached five years of age, it is reported that five per cent had birth defects, syndromes or have had serious medical problems. It is also reported about seven per cent were at risk of developmental difficulties due to birth related factors(1). In addition, the parents of a third of all five year olds reported either having been concerned about the child's development at some point or that the child had been diagnosed with a developmental disability by a healthcare professional.

It is important to stress that all significant differences that were identified were very small. This implies that the reported effects of childcare history are not likely to be of any clinical importance. The small differences between the groups could potentially be due to a small number of children being particularly sensitive to the time at which they start care outside the home or for the amount of time they spend away from home. Qualitative differences across the types of childcare institutions may also potentially influence these outcomes. However, these mechanisms will be explored further in future publications.

Unrequited Friendship -

Over the past few years, I?ve encountered a number of friends who?ve spoken about broken friendships or unreciprocated friendship. As I think about the depth of these conversations, I realized that friendships define and say as much about you as your choice of partner. I remember childhood conversations about giving love and giving in general because it?s the right thing to do. Let?s be real though, as you get older, the very nature of unidirectional friendships are draining and ridiculous. If you find yourself always available, the person most likely to lend a shoulder to cry on, and the brain in the operation, that?s great. But what happens when you need that from the person you?ve provided all of this free counsel too? You may need to consider not giving as much.

After talking to a friend of mine over the weekend, I was reminded how we as individuals have the responsibility to address issues in relationships early. Friendships are more like marriages than what I believe most people think or will even admit. Friendships often precede your serious relationships and many times will last through all of your ups and downs. What happens when you give your last dollar to someone, you provide strength and support to them, but when you most need them, they are absent or actually work against you? At the core of this conversation is emotional intelligence and reflection. If you are the person who sucks at being the friend to others that they have been to you, wake up, say thank you, apologize for being absent, and do something different. If you are the person that has given and given and given, and you are exhausted, stop giving. You have the right to say no and not feel guilty about it. Friendships, like marriage, need to be equally yolked as well.

Life is? already hard. We often look to people to provide support in our lives when we need, well?, support. Excuse the punctuation. But what happens when you look around and the support you need is non-existent? We all are capable of being deeper thinkers. Take a look in the mirror and be sure you are giving emotionally as much as you are taking. I?ve watched friendships splinter and become shells of what they were or could be because of a lack of care, concern, or common sense.? Once again, if you have benefited from a friendship, and you forgot just how much someone has done for you, call them today and say thank you. If you are acting ?Brand New? now that you got yourself together, remember, you are only a few seconds away form being at rock bottom and needing those people that really support you. What happens when they choose not to show up the next time? Think about giving more.

Jury selected in Jackson doctor's case (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? More than two years after the death of Michael Jackson, a judge swore in jurors Friday to hear the case against the doctor accused of killing him with an overdose of a powerful anesthetic in a rented Los Angeles mansion.

After months of investigation, Dr. Conrad Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February 2010. Since then, both sides have jockeyed to frame the case in their favor.

Prosecutors contend Murray was negligent in administering to Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in the bedroom of the singer's rented mansion without access to proper life-saving equipment.

Murray's attorneys have floated theories that the 50-year-old singer may have given himself the fatal dosage in June 2009 and say the Houston-based cardiologist did not give the singer anything that should have killed him.

Opening statements were scheduled Tuesday in the case.

The seven man, five woman jury was selected after less than six hours of questioning by a judge, defense attorneys and prosecutors.

The speed with which the panel was seated is likely a result of exhaustive 30-page questionnaire the group filled out earlier this month when jury selection began.

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren joked with prospective jurors that the process seemed like "the courtroom version of speed dating, trying to get the most information in a short time."

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, determined to move the process quickly, gave each side only 20 minutes to question the first 27 prospects.

The court worked later in the day to find six alternates to step in if any of the jurors had to be excused during the trial.

Murray has pleaded not guilty and could face four years in prison and loss of his medical license if convicted.

As might be expected, the personality and life of the late singer dominated much of the jury questioning.

"Part of this trial is going to be about Michael Jackson," said defense attorney Ed Chernoff. "We're not going to drag up stuff that happened that people may not want to hear about."

But he immediately asked panelists how they remembered Jackson.

One woman said, "as a child with the Jackson Five."

He then asked if she felt that Jackson was childlike in adulthood. She answered no. He asked the entire panel if they saw Jackson as so childlike that he might not be able to make responsible decisions.

"Does anybody here believe Michael Jackson was less capable of making decisions than anybody else?" Chernoff said.

Jurors shook their heads no.

"Does anybody feel Michael Jackson should be held to a different standard of responsibility?" the lawyer asked.

Again, jurors indicated negatively.

During his questioning, prosecutor Walgren framed the issue differently. He wanted to know if a "victim" in a hypothetical car accident could be held partially responsible for his own death if he walked in front of a driver who was running red lights and driving recklessly.

The defense objected to the term "victim," and Walgren changed it to "alleged victim."

He was probing whether panelists might hold Jackson partially responsible for his own demise and thus absolve Murray of responsibility. None said they would.

Bailiffs marched 84 potential jurors into the courtroom, but 10 were quickly dismissed because they said they could no longer serve on such a long case.

Scientists play ping-pong with single electrons

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

Scientists at Cambridge University have shown an amazing degree of control over the most fundamental aspect of an electronic circuit, how electrons move from one place to another.

Researchers from the University's Cavendish Laboratory have moved an individual electron along a wire, batting it back and forth over sixty times, rather like the ball in a game of ping-pong. The research findings, published today (22 September) in the journal Nature, may have applications in quantum computing, transferring a quantum 'bit' between processor and memory, for example.

Imagine you are at a party and you want to get to the other side of a crowded room to talk to someone. As you walk you have to weave around people who are walking, dancing or just standing in the way. You may also have to stop and greet friends along the way and by the time you reach the person you wanted to talk to you have forgotten what you were going to say. Wouldn't it be nice to be lifted up above the crowd, and pushed directly to your destination?

In a similar way, electrons carrying a current along a wire do not go directly from one end to the other but instead follow a complicated zigzag path. This is a problem if the electron is carrying information, as it tends to 'forget' it, or, more scientifically, the quantum state loses coherence.

In this work, a single electron can be trapped in a small well (called a quantum dot), just inside the surface of a piece of Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). A channel leads to another, empty, dot 4 microns (millionths of a metre) away. The channel is higher in energy than the surrounding electrons. A very short burst of sound (just a few billionths of a second long) is then sent along the surface, past the dot. The accompanying wave of electrical potential picks up the electron, which then surfs along the channel to the other dot, where it is captured. A burst of sound sent from the other direction returns the electron to the starting dot where the process can be repeated. The electron goes back and forth like a ping-pong ball. Rallies of up to 60 shots have been achieved before anything goes wrong.

"The movement of electrons by our 'surface acoustic wave' can also be likened to peristalsis in the oesophagus, where food is propelled from the mouth to the stomach by a wave of muscle contraction," explains Rob McNeil, the PhD student who did most of the work, helped by postdoc Masaya Kataoka, both at the University of Cambridge's Department of Physics, the Cavendish Laboratory.

"This is an enabling technology for quantum computers," Chris Ford, team leader of the research from the Semiconductor Physics Group in the Cavendish, says. "There is a lot of work going on worldwide to make this new type of computer, which may solve certain complex problems much faster than classical computers. However, little effort has yet been put into connecting up different components, such as processor and memory. Although our experiments do not yet show that electrons 'remember' their quantum state, this is likely to be the case. This would make the method of transfer a candidate for moving quantum bits of information (qubits) around a quantum circuit, in a quantum computer. Indeed, our theorist, Crispin Barnes, proposed using this mechanism to make a whole quantum computer a long time ago, and this is an important step towards that goal."

High court refuses to block Troy Davis execution

High court refuses to block Troy Davis execution

AP/The Savannah Morning News

Troy Anthony Davis entering Chatham County Superior Court in Savannah, Ga., in 1991, during his trail in the shooting death of off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail.

Georgia inmate Troy Davis has been executed for the killing of an off-duty police officer in a case that has drawn worldwide support over his claims of innocence.

Courts consistently ruled against him, however, and the officer's family says they finally have justice after 22 years.

Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday. He was put to death for the 1989 killing of Mark MacPhail. The officer was shot to death while rushing to help a homeless man being attacked by Davis and others.

Davis' global support came from high-profile advocates, including a former U.S. president, the pope and celebrities.

Shortly before, the Supreme Court late Wednesday had rejected an 11th-hour request to block the execution.

The court did not comment on its order, four hours after receiving the request. Davis' execution had been set to begin at 7 p.m., but the high court's decision was not issued until after 10 p.m.

Though Davis' attorneys said seven of nine key witnesses against him disputed all or parts of their testimony, state and federal judges had repeatedly ruled against granting him a new trial. As the court losses piled up Wednesday, his offer to take a polygraph test was rejected and the pardons board refused to give him one more hearing.

Davis' supporters staged vigils in the U.S. and Europe, declaring "I am Troy Davis" on signs, T-shirts and the Internet. Some tried increasingly frenzied measures, urging prison workers to stay home and even posting a judge's phone number online, hoping people would press him to put a stop to the lethal injection. President Barack Obama deflected calls for him to get involved.

"They say death row; we say hell no!" protesters shouted outside the Jackson prison where Davis was to be executed. In Washington, a crowd outside the Supreme Court yelled the same chant.

The crowd outside the prison swelled to more than 500 as night fell and a few dozen riot police stood watch. About 10 counterdemonstrators also were there, showing support for the death penalty and the family of Mark MacPhail, the man Davis was convicted of killing in 1989.

"He had all the chances in the world," his mother, Anneliese MacPhail, said of Davis in a telephone interview before the execution. "It has got to come to an end."

At a Paris rally, many of the roughly 150 demonstrators carried signs emblazoned with Davis' face. "Everyone who looks a little bit at the case knows that there is too much doubt to execute him," Nicolas Krameyer of Amnesty International said at the protest.

Davis' execution has been stopped three times since 2007, but on Wednesday the 42-year-old ran out of legal options.

As his last hours ticked away, an upbeat and prayerful Davis turned down an offer for a special last meal as he met with friends, family and supporters.

"Troy Davis has impacted the world," his sister Martina Correia said at a news conference. "They say, 'I am Troy Davis,' in languages he can't speak."

Correia, who is battling breast cancer and using a wheelchair as she helps coordinate rallies and other events, called on people to push for change in the justice system. Then she said, "I'm going to stand here for my brother," and got up with help from people around her.

Amnesty International says nearly 1 million people had signed a petition on Davis' behalf. His supporters included former President Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI, a former FBI director, the NAACP, several conservative figures and many celebrities, including hip-hop star Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.

"I'm trying to bring the word to the young people: There is too much doubt," rapper Big Boi, of the Atlanta-based group Outkast, said at a church near the prison.

The U.S. Supreme Court gave Davis an unusual opportunity to prove his innocence in a lower court last year, though the high court itself did not hear the merits of the case.

He was convicted in 1991 of killing MacPhail, who was working as a security guard at the time. MacPhail rushed to the aid of a homeless man who prosecutors said Davis was bashing with a handgun after asking him for a beer. Prosecutors said Davis had a smirk on his face as he shot the officer to death in a Burger King parking lot in Savannah.

No gun was ever found, but prosecutors say shell casings were linked to an earlier shooting for which Davis was convicted.

Witnesses placed Davis at the crime scene and identified him as the shooter, but several of them have recanted their accounts and some jurors have said they've changed their minds about his guilt. Others have claimed a man who was with Davis that night has told people he actually shot the officer.

"Such incredibly flawed eyewitness testimony should never be the basis for an execution," Marsh said. "To execute someone under these circumstances would be unconscionable."

State and federal courts, however, repeatedly upheld Davis' conviction. One federal judge dismissed the evidence advanced by Davis' lawyers as "largely smoke and mirrors."

"He has had ample time to prove his innocence," said MacPhail's widow, Joan MacPhail-Harris. "And he is not innocent."

Davis' best chance may have come last year, in a hearing ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court. It was the first time in 50 years that justices had considered a request to grant a new trial for a death row inmate.

The high court set a tough standard for Davis to exonerate himself, ruling that his attorneys must "clearly establish" Davis' innocence -- a higher bar to meet than prosecutors having to prove guilt. After the hearing judge ruled in prosecutors' favor, the justices didn't take up the case.

The execution has drawn widespread criticism in Europe, where politicians and activists made last-minute pleas for a stay.

Spencer Lawton, the district attorney who secured Davis' conviction in 1991, said he was embarrassed for the judicial system -- not because of the execution, but because it has taken so long to carry out.

"What we have had is a manufactured appearance of doubt which has taken on the quality of legitimate doubt itself. And all of it is exquisitely unfair," said Lawton, who retired as Chatham County's head prosecutor in 2008. "The good news is we live in a civilized society where questions like this are decided based on fact in open and transparent courts of law, and not on street corners."

Associated Press reporters Russ Bynum in Savannah, Kate Brumback and Marina Hutchinson in Jackson, Eric Tucker and Erica Werner in Washington and Sohrab Monemi in Paris contributed to this report.

Cassidian Communications to Demonstrate the Power of ...

? Cassidian Communications to exhibit broad range of interoperable solutions for public
safety at private demonstrations
? Innovative demonstrations will showcase the future of public safety through NG9-1-1, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Mapping, Land Mobile Radio integrated with Long Term Evolution (LTE) and emergency notification

Temecula, Calif. (PRWEB) September 21, 2011

Emergency communications leader Cassidian Communications, an EADS North America company, announced today that it will showcase a ground-breaking interactive demonstration of next generation (NG) 9-1-1 solutions including CAD and Mapping, digital trunked P25 Land Mobile Radio (LMR) solution, as well as emergency notification for public safety at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on September 22-23, 2011. The demonstrations will also be on display for federal government managers at an Innovation Fair to be held by EADS North America on September 28-29, 2011.

In its current state, the full-circle security and communications (FCSC) platform can be used to train emergency call center personnel, as well as to test multi-agency, multi-jurisdiction, standard operating procedures against various mission critical scenarios and environmental conditions. Evolution of the platform will involve implementations real-life environments, connected to real-time information streams, in order to provide a Common Operational Picture (COP) for the many roles and agencies responding to larger-scale disasters. The system?s human interface is designed to provide the intuitive and natural man-machine interaction so critical for systems that are not used every day. The solution will mainly be used by emergency call centers, real-time crime centers and fusion centers. Other Federal, State and Local agencies will use it to collect, analyze and report on emergency response activities, as well as to manage funding and mutual aid agreements.

?This system provides true interoperability and sets the standard for future technology while allowing existing customers to integrate their current solutions into one comprehensive platform,? stated Ian McGraw, vice president, advanced technologies for Cassidian Communications.

The intelligent integration of multiple sources of information and specialized applications with emergency communication systems will enable call takers to operate faster; use their scarce resources more efficiently, which will reduce costs; and most importantly, protect the lives of our first responders by providing them with relevant information when and where they need it the most.

The convergence of all forms of communications to Internet Protocol (IP) combined with the adoption of web-based standards for emergency response information exchange and associated applications will very soon affect the daily life of tens of thousands first responders in the nation.

?We are well on our way to interoperate on the communications front using the commercial standards, such as TCP/IP, CDMA, GSM, LTE, etc., as well as industry-specific standards like APCO P25 for LMR and the NENA i3 standard for NG9-1-1. The adoption rate could be accelerated by judicious Federal funding and State/Local policy, but everyone is at least converging,? McGraw continued. ?Now we have to address the issues of information exchange and applications access. For the most part, the Federal, State and Local governments legacy Information Technology (IT) infrastructures are not ready for the new world and are often pulled in diverging directions. They are faced with antiquated IT policies; turf and trust barriers; and significant funding issues are impeding the implementation of true information and application interoperability. It is pretty sad when you see how the World Wide Web has resolved many of these same problems very efficiently and economically a long time ago. The good news is that is it a recognized problem to solve and there are several initiatives focused on the development of necessary standards, pilot projects and infrastructure that will allow the creation of feature rich, interoperable products by ISV?s and government entities alike. Examples include: Unified Incident Command and Decision Support (UICDS), a DHS project focused on information sharing for emergency operations via open middleware; the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM); Integrated Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS); and a variety of other programs and projects focused on giving a broader level of situation awareness, information sharing, and methods to quickly and accurately communicate with first responders, fusion centers, and the public in the event of an emergency situation.?

Cassidian Communications full-circle security and communications demonstration platform exemplifies how, with interoperable communications and information systems along with a simple user interface, this new world can enhance the efficiency of emergency response and help protect our first responders. The map-based platform simulates dozens of private and public information sources that remain under the control of the operator and can be called upon as the situation dictates.
