Caine's Arcade: Bill Clinton Poses Funpass And Filmmaker Nirvan ...

In April, the sweet story of 9-year-old Caine Monroy, who built his own arcade out of cardboard boxes, took the Internet by storm and induced tears nationwide.

The heartwarming documentary about the arcade, made by Caine's first customer, filmmaker Nirvan Mullick, went so viral that $65,000 has since been raised as a part of a special scholarship fund to help Caine go to college, reported The Huffington Post.

In the latest update to the Caine's Arcade story, Mullick posed with former President Bill Clinton with a Caine's Arcade Funpass and posted it to his Facebook page.

Story continues after photo

Last week, Mullick attended the Social Innovation Summit in Moutain View, Calif., and shared the story of Caine?s Arcade and the Imagination Foundation -- a non-profit that stemmed from the Caine's Arcade short film, with the mission to foster and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in kids -- at the event.

After the presentations, a few of the summit attendees got together for a small dinner. Barbara Bush -- one of the attendees -- was at the dinner with Mullick and noticed that President Clinton happened to be at the same restaurant.

"On our way out, as we passed President Clinton?s table, the security agents said hello to Barbara, and President Clinton got up from his table to say hi. Barbara, who had seen my presentation, graciously introduced me to President Clinton, and I had a moment to shake his hand and snap this photo before he went back to his meal," Mullick wrote on his Facebook page.

Mullick was excited to show the photo to fans of Caine's Arcade. But one of Clinton's security personnel took him aside and insisted that the photo be for personal use only.

?So, that is for personal use only, right?? he told Mullick. ?We wouldn?t want to see this photo posted online, implying any kind of endorsement. We would hate to get our lawyers involved.?

?Oh, ok,? Mullick assured the bodyguard, ?I won?t post this anywhere.?

The filmmaker was about to leave the restaurant when he decided to try his luck one more time.

"I went back up to the security agent, handed him my card, and told him how the funpass President Clinton was photographed with was from a short film I made about a 9-year old boy who built a cardboard arcade," Mullick wrote.

That was when the security guard interrupted him to ask incredulously, ?You made Caine?s Arcade??

Mullick replied that he was indeed Caine's first customer, to which the security guard added, ?That movie made me cry.?

"I stood there without words," Mullick wrote.

The security guard then leaned in, put his hand on my shoulder and said, ?You can go ahead and post the photo.?

He then took Mullick's card, shook his hand, and promised to try and show President Clinton the film.

Holiday Man Killed in Car Accident on McMullen Booth & Curlew ...

Ambulance - noyes newsNo time of the year is good for a car accident, but during the Christmas season, it is tragic to have to bury a loved one because of an avoidable automobile accident. Sadly, an automobile accident at the intersection of McMullen Booth and Curlew roads in Palm Harbor this morning has caused the family of a Holiday man to have to do just that.

According to the ClearwaterPatch, a Clearwater man in a BMW ran a red light at the intersection of Curlew and McMullen Booth roads, killing a 54-year-old Holiday man in a pickup truck. The 54-year-old victim, who has not yet been identified, was headed eastbound on Curlew shortly after 5:30 a.m. when a BMW failed to stop for the red light on McMullen Booth and hit the pickup truck's passenger side, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, investigators said. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the BMW was taken to St. Joseph Hospital with serious injuries. After initial impact, the vehicles collided with a third vehicle.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the man who was killed. Too many families have to suffer because of avoidable automobile collisions. As you approach the yellow light today, think about how this Holiday man's family is going to have to celebrate the holidays and then stop safely. The extra minutes at the light could save your life.

Edward Goldberg: The Globalization 5 -- How Globalization Changed America in 2012, and What It Might Mean for 2013

It is the season of lists: best movies, best books, and on and on. As I teach and write on globalization with all its various meanings, I thought it would be interesting to do something very different: a geo-political-economic list -- a list of the globalization top five from an American perspective.

Why only five? Because I am only giving an overview, a macro look at how globalization is now shaping or will shape America. More than five and the list would tend to become less of an overview and more of a detailed analysis.

1. America might still be a conservative to middle-of-the-road country politically, but it has become economically a globalized country. Europe and China bashing does not make sense when so many of America's jobs are dependent either on foreign direct investment or on international trade. Whether one is talking about this year's projected U.S. export of 12.30 million bales of cotton primarily from Texas, and going mainly to China, or the BMW factory in Spartanburg, S.C., with its investment of $750 million, which made it the largest car factory in the United States by number of employees, or Siemens, with its 60,000 employees in the United States, or Volkswagen which, after investing over $1 billion, is completing a plant in Tennessee that will produce 150,000 cars per year, America's economy is globalized.

2. Of course the corollary to this is that America is no longer a self-contained continental market, secure against world wide economic contagion. If Europe, our largest trading partner, has pneumonia, if China and the emerging market slow down partly because of Europe and partly because of how interconnected their economies are, the U.S. economy is affected. Just look at the IMF figures that show the euro crisis has reduced the projected United States per capita GDP by 2 percent over the last three years.

3. The American economy is in a uniquely positive position compared to the rest of the world. This is partly because of the stability of the American political system as just demonstrated again by our last election, and by continued international money flows into American treasury bills. It is also partly due to new technology that has unlocked huge quantities of natural gas, dramatically reducing the cost of large scale industrial manufacturing in the United States, while at the same time enabling America to approach energy self-sufficiency. And it is also partly due to the post-crash comparative strength of the American banks, which unlike the European banks, are regulated on a monetary-wide system. In addition, the American banks were forced to undergo a severe transparent stress test after the crash by the Treasury Department, administered by the Federal Reserve.

4. Globalization has now entered a new, more unwieldy, more competitive and much more fragile stage. It is forcing countries that appear to be rivals or potential rivals to act in specific areas as each other's joint venture partners. Unlike previous times in history, the world-wide capital flows of globalized world have forced nations that might be rivals to also be dependent on each other. During the cold war, the Soviet Union's internal machinations never affected the United States' continental-based economy. Now rumors come out of Beijing that China might consider stimulating its economy, and the New York stock exchange immediately bumps up, as if Ben Bernanke announced QE4. These nation-to-nation joint ventures take a cue from the business concept of Global Strategic Partnerships where corporations join together in one market while remaining rivals in another, much like airlines that agree to combine routes on one continent and compete on another.

5. The dominant issue of 2013 will be China. Can it redirect its economy and maintain its growth rate under its current governing system? Or has the low-hanging fruit (cheap labor for manufacturing) already been picked and it is now facing an insurmountable growth wall fortified by vested interests, which will inhibit any change?

What will be the consequences of a failure to change? Will the Chinese government need to become more nationalistic and increasingly more aggressive in order to maintain its "mandate from heaven"? And of course whether it changes or does not change, how does the need of China to protect its own global supply lines conflict with America's traditional post-World War II role of guarantor of the freedom of the seas?

Compounding this of course is how much of the world's economy has become dependent on China's economic growth, whether Brazil, Africa, Southeast Asia or Australia, and how will this slow down affect the economics and politics of those countries?

Internet and Online Business: Why Purchase EBooks - Benefits of ...

Ever since the idea of digital books took the publishing world by storm, millions of enthusiastic readers are looking for eBooks as the popular reading choice over hardbound paper copies. The best thing about eBooks is that you do not have to destroy the rainforests to produce paper on which to print the written word. Here are some benefits of choosing eBooks as your present and future reading choice.

Benefits of eBooks

What is an e-book? An e-book - also known as an electronic or a digital book - is the digitalized version of a full-length book manuscript. This can include links, hyperlinks, text, images, flowcharts and diagrams. eBooks can be written on any topic imaginable and can be of any length. All you need is an e-book reader to interpret the digital word into a readable format.

Some of the popular hand-held reader brand names are Cybook Opus, Hanlin V3, Illiad, iPad, IRex digital reader, JetBook, Kindle DX, Kobo Reader, Samsung Galaxy, Nook, Microsoft reader, Sony Reader, Tablet, etc.

Where to Purchase Digital eBooks?

Are you looking for eBooks on a specific topic? You need to look for a place where you can buy the electronic book of your choice and download it on your computer or on your e-book reading device. Some of the better-known digitalized books selling sites have just this downside - you cannot read their eBooks on your own personal e-book reader. You have to buy their expensive electronic book reading software. This may turn out to be an expensive proposition for a number of people. That is why you need to choose a well-known and popular e-book selling site where you can purchase digital books that can be read easily and instantly on your own personal e-book reader.

Advantages of eBooks over Printed Books

A digital book is forever. It is never going to be torn and its pages are never going to be attacked by silverfish, dry rot, or Time. That is why valuable and priceless books are being turned into eBooks by a number of libraries- as well as by Google - for eternal preservation purposes.

One of the best advantages of an e-book over its printed equivalent is its tiny size. Thanks to the storage capacity ranging from 2 GB to 32 GB of a number of e-book readers, you can store anywhere between 200 to 20,000 books on your readers nowadays. Just imagine carrying your full library with you wherever you go. It is impossible, obviously! Thanks to these books, however, having been preserved in the digital mode, you can appreciate the clear and crisp images, drawings and paintings of your favorite books, displayed on your e-book reader screen.

How to Download eBooks of Your Choice

Downloading eBooks and preserving them on your eBook reading device is very easy. Once you have purchased the book of your choice, you are going to be directed to the book's download link. After that, you can download books online in the format of your choice. Book publishers normally publish their books in EPUB and MOBI format. These are the most popular and easily read e-book formats available and preferred in the digital publishing world today.

You can now read your downloaded book on your computer. You can also read your purchased electronic book on your e-book reading device after loading the book on it.

Therefore, now that you know all about the advantages of eBooks and how to?purchase eBooks, add new volumes to your digital library and book collection right now. Learn about how to?purchase eBooks, their readers, different formats and benefits of eBooks. Get to know more about buying digital and download more of them to add into your collection.

(AP) ? A national dialogue committee said a referendum on a disputed draft constitution will be held on schedule, but President Mohammed Morsi has agreed to rescind the near-absolute power he had granted himself.

The statement came after a meeting that was boycotted by the main opposition leaders who are calling for the Dec. 15 vote to be canceled.

Morsi had called for the dialogue to try to defuse a spiraling crisis, but the decision appeared unlikely to appease the opposition since it recommends the referendum go ahead as scheduled. Morsi's initial declaration was to be rendered ineffective anyway after the referendum.

Gamal Eid, a human rights lawyer, said the recommendations to rescind some powers were a "play on words" since Morsi had already achieved the desired aim of finalizing the draft constitution and protecting it from a judicial challenge.

The charter, which would enshrine Islamic law and was drafted despite a boycott by secular and Christian members of the assembly, is at the heart of a political crisis that began Nov. 22 when Morsi granted himself authority without judicial oversight.

Opposition activists are camping outside the presidential palace and are calling for more protests on Sunday.

Several rallies on both sides have drawn tens of thousands of people into the streets and sparked fierce bouts of street battles that have left at least six people dead. Several offices of the president's Muslim Brotherhood also have been torched in the unrest.

Selim al-Awa, an Islamist at the meeting, said the committee found it would be a violation of earlier decisions to change the date of the referendum.

However, the committee recommended removing articles that granted Morsi powers to declare emergency laws and shield him from judicial oversight.

Members of the committee said Morsi had agreed to the recommendations, but there was no confirmation from the Islamist leader.

Bassem Sabry, a writer and activist, called the changes a "stunt" that would embarrass the opposition by making it look like Morsi was willing to compromise but not solve the problem.

"In the end, Morsi got everything he wanted," he said, pointing out the referendum would be held without the consensus Morsi had promised to seek and without giving people sufficient time to study the document.

The majority of the 54 members of the committee were Islamists, as well as members of the constitutional panel that drafted the disputed charter. But the main opponents were not present at the meeting, which lasted over 10 hours.

The panel also said that if the constitution is rejected by voters, Morsi will call for the election of a new drafting committee within three months, a prospect that would prolong the transition.

Opponents say the draft constitution disregards the rights of women and Christians.

The president has insisted his decrees were meant to protect the country's transition to democracy from former regime figures trying to derail it.

The deepening political rift in Egypt had triggered an earlier warning Saturday from the military of "disastrous consequences" if the constitutional crisis isn't resolved through dialogue.

It was the first political statement by the military since the newly elected Morsi sidelined it from political life.

Weeks after he was sworn in, Morsi ordered its two top generals to retire, and gave himself legislative powers that the military had assumed in the absence of parliament, which had been dissolved by the courts.

The military said serious dialogue is the "best and only" way to overcome the conflict, which has left the country deeply divided between Islamist supporters of the president and his mostly secular opponents.

"Anything other than (dialogue) will force us into a dark tunnel with disastrous consequences, something which we won't allow," the military said in a statement broadcast on state TV and attributed to an unnamed military official.

Heightening the tension, Hazem Abu Ismail, the leader of group of radical Islamists staging a sit-in outside a media complex on the outskirts of Cairo, gave a thinly veiled threat of more violence, saying the protest outside the presidential palace was an "affront" to the president and will not be tolerated.

Earlier this week, the area around the palace was the scene of the worst civilian clashes since Morsi came to power.

In an attempt to calm the situation, Morsi called for Saturday's dialogue. But the main opposition leaders refused to attend, saying it didn't address their main demands and was being held under the threat of violence against protesters.

"No reasonable person would agree to be part of a dialogue held at the point of a sword," the National Salvation Front said in a statement.

The crisis began Nov. 22 when Morsi granted himself authority free of judicial oversight, mainly because he feared a looming court decision that was expected to declare the Islamist-led constitutional drafting assembly illegal and order it disbanded. The assembly then quickly adopted a draft constitution despite a walkout by Christian and secular members.

The moves touched off a new wave of opposition and unprecedented clashes between the president's Islamist supporters, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, and protesters accusing him of becoming a new strongman.

With the specter of more fighting among Egyptians looming, the military sealed off the presidential palace plaza with tanks and barbed wire.

State media also reported that the government was working on a new law to allow the military to arrest civilians, but there was no official word on that either.

The state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper quoted an unnamed military official as saying the move would be "preventive" if the situation worsened.

The report could not be independently confirmed and the law would have to be signed by Morsi before it takes effect.

At the presidential palace sit-in on Saturday, TV footage showed the military setting up a new wall of cement blocks around the palace.

Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan accused the opposition of seeking the military's return to politics by "pushing matters to the brink."

He said the military statement showed it agrees on the legitimacy of the elected president, the referendum plans and state institutions, and will protect them from any "attack."

The group's top leader Mohammed Badie and his powerful deputy Khairat el-Shater, meanwhile, held news conferences alleging a conspiracy to topple Morsi, although they presented little proof.

Badie said the opposition, which has accused his group of violence, is responsible for attacks on Muslim Brotherhood offices. He also claimed that most of those killed in last week's violence at the palace and other governorates were Brotherhood members.

"These are crimes, not opposition or disagreement in opinion," he said.

Meanwhile, the opposition accused gangs organized by the Brotherhood and other Islamists of attacking its protesters, calling on Morsi to disband them and open an investigation into the bloodshed.

Meanwhile, with dialogue boycotted by the main opposition players, members of a so-called Alliance of Islamists forces warned it will take all measures to protect "legitimacy" and the president ? comments that signal further violence may lie ahead.

Mostafa el-Naggar, a former lawmaker and protest leader during the uprising that led to Mubarak's ouster in February 2011, said the Brotherhood and military statements suggested the crisis was far from over.

"As it stands, Egypt is captive to internal decisions of the Brotherhood," he said.

Woman uses Facebook to find kidney donor

DRACUT, Mass. ?

Shannon Gouveia had never even heard of live kidney donation, but when she discovered the Facebook page of a stranger who needed a kidney, she felt compelled to give.

As soon as Gouveia read Olga Gauthier's story on Facebook and started looking into live kidney donation, she had a feeling she was meant to be a donor for Gauthier.

"I can't even explain it, it just felt so right," she said in an interview at Gauthier's home in Dracut last month.

When Gouveia went to get tested to see if she was a match for Gauthier, there were other people ahead of her being tested.

"I thought that's fine, because I knew it's going to be me." said Gouveia.

Gauthier, who has polycystic kidney disease, or PKD, needed a new kidney and was looking for a live donor. She had been put on the transplant list in June 2010.

None of her family or friends were a match and she was desperate to find a donor. She had heard about other people who were looking for donors who started a Facebook page, so in January, she started the page, "Kidney for Olga."

"I was waiting for nothing, so I had to take matters into my own hands," she said.

Gouveia's sister saw Gauthier's page through a friend of hers and sent the page to Gouveia.

INDIANAPOLIS ? U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar will continue wielding influence in Washington after he leaves office, albeit with a much younger audience.

Lugar is starting a Washington, D.C., internship program with the University of Indianapolis called the Richard G. Lugar Academy. He has also agreed to deliver a handful of lectures each year as a distinguished professor at the private university.

Lugar, 80, said Friday the academy will focus on many of the issues he's addressed in his 36-year Senate career, including weapons proliferation and global food shortages. He smiled broadly as he talked about mentoring students over the last four decades and said the new program should help more students gain experience in the nation's capital.

"It will not be mandatory that they have a semester there, or even a few weeks, but many will want to choose that. As a result we will try to introduce them to people in Washington D.C., as well as to problems that everyone there, as well the students, will try to solve," he said.

He punctuated just how close students could get to international issues by recalling his own experience during the 2001 anthrax attacks on the Capitol, which put the area on even higher alert shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

"We were rushed out to the Dirksen (Senate office) building, our throats swabbed and told to take Cipro tablets for 48 hours or we might die. And that was not melodramatic, the post office people that handled this died," he said. "This happened in our country, in my office."

The question of Lugar's post-Senate career has lingered since he was defeated in May after a grueling primary battle with the tea party-backed state treasurer Richard Mourdock. Lugar's name arose as a possible choice to replace the departing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but aides quickly nixed that idea. He said Friday he was not contacted by the Obama administration about a Cabinet position.

Lugar has travelled the globe promoting non-proliferation since May and was most recently awarded the Defense Department's highest civilian award for his work with former Georgia Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn.

Lugar said he is looking at potential work with Indiana University and Georgetown University to expand the public service program, and is also in talks with the German Marshall Fund.

Lugar's announcement marked something of a homecoming for the elder statesman. University President Robert Manuel said in his remarks that it was former University of Indianapolis President Gene Sease who convinced then-Mayor Lugar to teach at the university while running for U.S. Senate in 1976.

"Professor Lugar taught political science that year, giving students a front-row seat to the electoral process," Manuel said.

Lugar later joked that the job was perfect: he taught in the morning and campaigned in the afternoon and evening.
