Braves back in playoffs with 4-3 win over Marlins

ATLANTA (AP) ? This time, the Atlanta Braves held onto their big lead and locked up a playoff trip with plenty of time to spare.

It couldn't have felt any sweeter for retiring star Chipper Jones.

Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to put Atlanta back in the postseason with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Freeman's dramatic drive off Mike Dunn clinched at least a National League wild-card berth for the Braves, who squandered a big lead in the wild-card race with a huge collapse last September.

"They took the attitude last year to try and hang on," Jones said. "This year we took the bull by the horns. We're shooting for the stars. We're still shooting for the division until they close us out."

Jones, who plans to retire at the end of the season, led off the ninth with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch by Dunn (0-3) and scored when Freeman's 22nd homer easily cleared the center-field wall.

"There was never any doubt," Jones said during the clubhouse celebration. "We knew that last year was somewhat of a fluke."

Craig Kimbrel (3-1) worked a scoreless inning to help the Braves win their 22nd straight game started by Kris Medlen. The streak is the longest in the majors since the New York Yankees won 22 consecutive games started by Whitey Ford in 1950 and '53.

Last year's September flop was fresh on Medlen's mind.

"You can't really win consistently until you lose," Medlen said. "Losing's a big part of being able to win."

Returning to the postseason helps wipe away some of last season's frustration for the Braves, who blew an 8?-game lead in the wild-card standings and finished September 9-18. They missed the playoffs after one of the biggest meltdowns in baseball history.

This year, Atlanta cruised most of the way and wrapped up a postseason spot with more than a week remaining in the regular season. And the Braves still have a chance to catch first-place Washington in the NL East. They moved within four games of the Nationals, who lost to Philadelphia 6-3, with eight to play.

"It makes it all worth it. I'm happier for these guys because they worked hard," Jones said.

While he was being interviewed on television, the 40-year-old slugger was doused with bubbly and beer by teammates in a jubilant clubhouse.

"I am so cold right now!" he said.

Four of the five NL playoff spots are secured. In addition to Atlanta, Washington, Cincinnati and San Francisco have all punched their tickets to the postseason.

The second-place Braves have a comfortable cushion in the wild-card race, and St. Louis leads the chase for the league's second wild card.

The Braves will return to the postseason for the first time since 2010.

Jones went 1 for 2 with two runs and a sacrifice fly that made it 1-all in the second. He is batting .296 and has 14 homers with 63 RBIs. His leadership has been unmistakable in a season that included a final All-Star appearance.

The Braves tied it 1-all in the second. Jones walked, moved to second on Freeman's single and scored from second on Dan Uggla's single.

After Martin Prado's two-out triple in the third, Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi struck out Heyward, but Heyward tripled with one out in the sixth and scored on Jones' sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.

Freeman said he expected Jones to lead off the ninth with a hit.

"He's done it all year," the 23-year-old Freeman said. "That's what he's a Hall of Famer for. He got the rally started today."

Eovaldi was trying to win for the first time in six starts. He allowed four hits, two runs and two walks in six innings. He struck out eight.

A.J. Ramos got the first two outs for Miami in the seventh before Dan Jennings struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Baker with a runner on first. Heath Bell faced the minimum in the eighth for the Marlins, and Eric O'Flaherty did the same in the bottom half of the inning for Atlanta.

Donovan Solano hit his first career homer in the second to make it 1-0 and followed with a two-run shot in the seventh to make it 3-2.

"Yeah, I mean, we've lost a lot of games and to lose that game like that is heartbreaking," Dunn said, "especially with the way the team played today."

Medlen did not win for the first time in nine starts, allowing five hits, three runs, no walks and striking out eight. The right-hander began the game with a 15-0 record over his last 27 starts dating to May 31, 2009.

Those numbers were just a backdrop, though, to the bigger picture of Jones returning to the playoffs in his final season with Atlanta.

"We're not done yet," he said. "We've got one more step that we've got our eyes on."

NOTES: Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said MRI results on CF Michael Bourn's left thumb revealed no structural damage. Gonzalez hopes Bourn can return to the lineup Wednesday. ... Reed Johnson started in CF and hit leadoff for Bourn. ... Gonzalez spoke with Jones before the game and both decided that the 3B wants to start the last six remaining regular-season home games. ... Jones' double gave him 2,724 hits to tie Roberto Alomar for 57th place on the career list ? and for fifth among switch-hitters. ... Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said RF Giancarlo Stanton, who has missed the last six games with a sore left ribcage, is lobbying to return to the lineup soon. Stanton took batting practice before the game. ... The Marlins were waiting for MRI results on OF Justin Ruggiano, who's been out since last Friday with a right shoulder sprain. ... Atlanta SS Paul Janish is trying to rehab his left shoulder in hopes of returning for the division series next month if Atlanta is still playing.

Angry Birds sequel 'Bad Piggies' launches tomorrow, we go hands-on

Angry Birds sequel 'Bad Piggies' launches today on iPad, we go handson

Finnish game studio Rovio went from relatively unknown to center stage with the Angry Birds franchise. And in record time, too -- the first Angry Birds landed on Apple's iOS App Store in December 2009, less than three years ago, and has since become an international sensation. The birds spawned a flock of sequels, branded tie-ins, and tons of merchandise. All this adds up to quite a bit of chicken scratch for Rovio, and also quite a bit of pressure to keep the money train rolling.

Today marks Rovio's first true sequel to the original Angry Birds, and it's focused on the other side of the farm: the pigs. Enter Bad Piggies. Unlike Angry Birds, Bad Piggies isn't about flinging anything towards a complicated structure in order to knock it down. Instead, it's about moving one very green, goofy sounding pig to various points on a map to collect items and reach a goal -- it's much more Cut the Rope than Angry Birds. The same physics-based game mechanics are at play in Bad Piggies that made both Cut the Rope and Angry Birds so popular, and they're just as fun in this time around. But how do you get said piggy to the goals? You build a contraption, of course.

Each level starts with a build section, allowing players to create all types of vehicles in order to transport the pig from point A to point B (while grabbing collectibles along the way). Only a small handful of build options are available, keeping Bad Piggies just as speedy of a game -- to pick up and play while commuting or while waiting at the dentist's office -- as its wildly successful progenitor. It's hard to say if Bad Piggies will recapture the success that Rovio found with Angry Birds proper, but all the hallmarks are there: quick, fun gameplay, colorful characters, goofy sounds, and accessibility (we couldn't help but get all three stars on every level, but you don't have to in order to proceed, should it prove too difficult). Bad Piggies launches tomorrow morning for iOS devices, Mac, and Android.

Why Obama, Romney gravitate to '60 Minutes' and 'The View'

Audiences don't trust the news media in general, polls show, but do trust the coverage of shows they like. That is steering Obama and Romney toward softer, 'friendlier' shows to a level unprecedented in a presidential campaign.

By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / September 24, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Obama, shown in this combination photo, have both steered toward 'friendlier' television shows to a level unprecedented in a presidential campaign.

It wasn't that long ago that candidate Bill Clinton's appearance on "The Arsenio Hall Show" set pundits' tongues to wagging. Stepping outside the confines of press conferences and serious news programs was considered risky, possibly trivializing the aspirant to the office of the presidency. Suffice to say that such qualms, if any had lingered, have been definitively laid to rest during the 2012 election, a campaign during which President Obama and GOP rival Mitt Romney have tapped such "free media" ? of both the hard and soft varieties ? at unprecedented levels.?

The most recent exhibit came Sunday night, when "60 Minutes," the long-running CBS news show, aired back-to-back interviews with Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney. Next, both the president and first lady Michelle Obama will show up on the daytime talk show ?The View? on Tuesday.

Romney, meanwhile, has promised to sit on the sofas of the ?sharp-tongued? women, as he dubbed them, in October. And, of course, appearances with the late-night denizens, David Letterman and Jay Leno, continue, with both the candidates and their wives showing up there with regularity. Mrs. Obama read Mr. Letterman?s Top Ten List heading into the Democratic National Convention. Romney has been on "The Tonight Show" four times, and his wife, Ann Romney, is set to chat with Mr. Leno Tuesday night.

What gives? It's not as if the campaigns, which are rolling in dough, can't afford to buy time on air. Some two-thirds of a billion dollars have already been spent on TV ads, according to the National Journal.?

No, such media appearances serve the interests of today's candidates in many ways ? and can actually build audience trust amid a climate in which, according to a new Gallup poll, 60 percent of Americans don't trust media coverage in general.

?People tend to trust the media they choose,? whether it?s blogs or social media or a favorite daytime talk show,?says Barbara O?Connor, director emeritus of the Institute for Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento. By appearing on someone's favorite show, a candidate helps to bridge that trust gap, she says.?

Bill Rosenberg, a political science professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, agrees: "The question is not so much resources, which there seems to be plenty of now, but source credibility."?Increasingly, people turn to the media outlets they personally trust, so the candidates try to use those avenues to deliver that credibility to those audiences, he adds.?

Succop lifts Chiefs over Saints 27-24 in OT

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Remember the hard-luck Saints of old ? that mistake-prone franchise that routinely crumbled in crunch time?

In their first three games since coach Sean Payton was suspended in the NFL's bounty probe, the Saints have started to resemble that franchise again, and even Drew Brees has been helpless to do anything about it.

The Saints were unable to protect an 18-point, third-quarter lead, and fans in the Superdome watched in dread as Kansas City's Ryan Succup booted his club-record sixth field goal to lift the previously winless Chiefs to a 27-24 overtime victory over New Orleans on Sunday.

The Saints have now lost twice in the Superdome, where they were unbeaten a season ago, and which will host the Super Bowl next February.

But New Orleans now looks like a long shot to be playing for a championship after opening with losses to three 1-2 teams.

"We are far from talking about the Super Bowl right now," Brees said. "What need to focus on is getting one win."

Next week, the reeling Saints (0-3) travel to Green Bay.

The Chiefs (1-2) meanwhile, went home feeling a lot better about not only getting their first victory, but the resolve they showed to get it.

"The best part is our guys never gave up," said Succop, a perfect 6 for 6 on kicks ranging from 25 to 45 yards. "We kept fighting, it was a huge team win and I'm just really excited to have had a part in it."

After Jamaal Charles' 91-yard touchdown run ? the longest running play in Chiefs history, and the longest given up by the Saints ? started Kansas City's comeback, the Chiefs defense thwarted a Saints scoring chance when Stanford Routt intercepted Brees' underthrown pass for Devery Henderson near the Kansas City goal line late in the third quarter. Brees, who was 20-of-36 for 240 yards and three TDs ? never had another completion after that, and only attempted six passes because the Saints also never got another first down.

Charles, who finished with 233 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving, scored the only touchdown the Chiefs needed. The rest of the scoring came on field goals, as well as a safety on Justin Houston's third sack of the game.

"This team needed a win, and a win like that really helped out in particular," Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said. "There were a lot of doubts about what we could do and they showed a lot of character."

Tiring of answering questions about the effects of the bounty scandal on their season, the Saints were once again in no mood to discuss whether things might have been different if Payton were still around.

"All I can say is Sean Payton is a great football coach," Brees said. "But he's not here, so the rest of us have to find a way."

Instead, the Chiefs found a way after their safety got them the ball, down by 3, with 5:33 to go.

Matt Cassel's spinning scramble and 11-yard pass across the field to Jon Baldwin on third-and-10 extended the drive, which also included Cassel's completion to Dwayne Bowe on fourth-and-5 before Succop's 43-yard game-tying kick with 3 seconds left.

In one of several lowlights for the crew of replacement officials working the game, New Orleans was briefly ruled the winner on the field in overtime when running back Shaun Draughn lost the ball stretching for a first down and safety Roman Harper picked up the ball and ran to the end zone.

The fumble was overturned on video review, but the spot came up a half-yard short of a first down. Charles easily converted a fourth-down run to extend the winning drive.

"We knew coming in that we could run against this defense," Charles said. "It was an opportunity we had to take advantage of."

The Saints scored first when Lance Moore's leaping 9-yard catch capped an 83-yard, game-opening drive.

After that, however, no team got in the end zone for the rest of the half, which ended with the Saints up 10-6.

New Orleans appeared to be taking command in the third quarter thanks to a pair of turnovers by the Chiefs.

First came a fumble by Dexter McCluster, who hurt his shoulder while falling on his own after a short catch, then let the ball go moments before he would have been touched down by cornerback Jabari Greer. Officials initially ruled McCluster down while linebacker Jonathan Casillas scooped the ball and ran to the end zone. The Saints challenged and won a reversal on replay review, giving them the ball on the Chiefs 19. That set up Brees' 1-yard TD pass to tight end Jimmy Graham.

New Orleans then went ahead 24-6 on Brees' 6-yard swing pass to fullback Jed Collins, capping a short drive set up by Greer's interception and 28-yard return to the Kansas City 7.

After that, the Saints fell apart in a way they had not in making the playoffs ? and winning one title ? during the past three seasons.

"We're obviously disappointed, but not disheartened," Saints interim head coach Aaron Kromer said. "We don't know how we're supposed to act right now."

NOTES: Along with McCluster, the Chiefs lost starting C Rodney Hudson to an apparent right knee injury and RB Peyton Hillis to an ankle injury in the third quarter. ... Saints LB David Hawthorne left with a hamstring injury in the first half and did not return. ... Brees now has TD passes in 46 straight regular season games, one behind Johnny Unitas' record of 47.

"WWE '13" to feature "I Quit" Match and King of the Ring tournament

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. ??THQ Inc. today announced two new features for "WWE '13," the latest installment of the hit video game franchise. The King of the Ring tournament makes its triumphant debut in the virtual squared circle and, for the first time in eight years, the "I Quit" Match returns to a WWE video game.

King of The Ring highlights: (WATCH KING OF THE RING VIDEO PLAYLIST)

  • Create your very own King of the Ring tournament! Players are able to choose the number of participants (4, 8 or 16) as well as the gender of the participants involved (that's right, Divas can also take part in the King of the Ring tournament).
  • Players can choose the type of match they?d like for their tournament (normal, backstage brawl, Hell in a Cell, WWE Iron Man, Ladder Match, Last Man Standing, Steel Cage, Submission, Table, TLC and Extreme Rules).
  • Participants in the tournament can be chosen by random or selected by the player.
  • Each match in the tournament can be simulated or played.
  • The King of The Ring tournament can be played solo or with a friend for multiplayer action.
  • A special coronation cut-scene is shown for the winner of the tournament.

"I Quit" Match highlights: (WATCH "I QUIT" MATCH VIDEO PLAYLIST)

  • The "I Quit" Match finally makes its long-awaited return! It has been approximately eight years since the match type has been featured in the franchise. The match type has been completely redesigned from top to bottom to provide players with the most authentic representation of the "I Quit" Match ever seen in video game form.
  • In keeping with WWE programming, the "I Quit" Match is a 1-on-1, no-holds-barred, anything goes affair. Utilize anything and everything within the in-ring environment to force your opponent to say the humiliating words, "I Quit!"
  • When your opponent is in a grounded state, press the B button (Xbox 360 controls)/pin button to summon the referee to the grounded opponent. The referee will kneel down next to the grounded opponent and place a microphone in front of the competitor's face. It?s at this point that the "I Quit" mini-game is triggered. Stop the moving cursor within the designated target zone before the words "I Quit" fully materialize on screen to inform the referee of your desire to continue the match. If the opponent is unable to complete the mini-game in time, the opponent will automatically quit the match and be declared the loser. If a Superstar is in possession of a stored finisher icon, it can be used to automatically win the mini-game and continue the match. However, doing so will result in the loss of that finisher icon. This option should only be used when you?re at your most desperate.
  • When an opponent is in the midst of performing the "I Quit" mini-game, the attacking Superstar can utilize an Intimidation Taunt (by pressing one of the directional buttons on the d-pad) to increase the difficulty of the mini-game. Performing an Intimidation Taunt will cause the mini-game meter to shake, which in turn makes it that much harder for the defender to complete the mini-game in time. Use of Intimidation results in a loss of momentum for the attacker, so think twice before using it. If the attacker doesn?t have a sufficient amount of momentum within the meter, the Intimidation Taunt can?t be used.
  • The "I Quit" mini-game can also be triggered by applying a Breaking Point submission hold on an opponent. Just like in grounded situations, the referee will position himself near the trapped defender wherein he will position the microphone in front of the competitor's face. Complete the mini-game successfully to break out of the submission hold and continue the match. Failure to break out in time will result in a loss.

"WWE '13" will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation3 system and Wii system from Nintendo, with a scheduled release date of October 30, 2012, in North America.

New findings reported in the American Journal of Medicine

Philadelphia, PA, September 21, 2012 Coronary heart disease is a major cause of death in women. A new study has found that a diet rich in antioxidants, mainly from fruits and vegetables, can significantly reduce the risk of myocardial infarction. The study is published in the October issue of The American Journal of Medicine.

"Our study was the first to look at the effect of all dietary antioxidants in relation to myocardial infarction," says lead investigator Alicja Wolk, DrMedSci, Division of Nutritional Epidemiology, Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. "Total antioxidant capacity measures in a single value all antioxidants present in diet and the synergistic effects between them."

The study followed 32,561 Swedish women aged 49-83 from September 1997 through December 2007. The women completed a food-frequency questionnaire in which they were asked how often, on average, they consumed each type of food or beverage during the last year. The investigators calculated estimates of total antioxidant capacity from a database that measures the oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAC) of the most common foods in the United States (no equivalent database of Swedish foods exists). The women were categorized into five groups of total antioxidant capacity of diet.

During the study, 1,114 women suffered a myocardial infarction. Women in the group with the highest total antioxidant capacity had a 20% lower risk, and they consumed almost 7 servings per day of fruit and vegetables, which was nearly 3 times more than the women with the least antioxidant capacity, who on average consumed 2.4 servings.

Dr. Wolk notes that trials testing high doses of antioxidant supplements have failed to see any benefit on coronary heart disease and, in fact, in one study higher all-cause mortality was reported. "In contrast to supplements of single antioxidants, the dietary total antioxidant capacity reflects all present antioxidants, including thousands of compounds, all of them in doses present in our usual diet, and even takes into account their synergistic effects," she explains.

In a commentary accompanying the article, Pamela Powers Hannley, MPH, Managing Editor of The American Journal of Medicine, observes that with the industrialization of our food supply, Americans began to consume more total calories and more calories from processed food high in fat and sugar. As a result, obesity rates began to climb steadily. "Although weight-loss diets abound in the US, the few which emphasize increasing intake of fruits and vegetables actually may be on the right track," she says. "Yet only 14% of American adults and 9.5% of adolescents eat five or more servings of fruits or vegetables a day."

HBT: Jays president 'pissed off' by team's record

The Blue Jays and their fans have, for years, lamented the fact that in the stacked and moneyed AL East, no team besides Boston and New York stood a chance.?Well, first Tampa Bay put lie to that notion and this year the Orioles and the second wild card are doing that same.

So tell us, Blue Jays President Paul Beeston, how does that make you feel?

?I?m actually pissed off about it ??Everybody?s got a shot. Getting into the playoffs gives you a chance to win. A lot of teams can with the World Series, starting with the play-in game. I?m more pissed off because that could have been us.?

I bet you?re not alone in that sentiment.

Your memory is like the telephone game, altered with each retelling

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Remember the telephone game where people take turns whispering a message into the ear of the next person in line? By the time the last person speaks it out loud, the message has radically changed. It's been altered with each retelling.

Turns out your memory is a lot like the telephone game, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study.

Every time you remember an event from the past, your brain networks change in ways that can alter the later recall of the event. Thus, the next time you remember it, you might recall not the original event but what you remembered the previous time. The Northwestern study is the first to show this.

"A memory is not simply an image produced by time traveling back to the original event -- it can be an image that is somewhat distorted because of the prior times you remembered it," said Donna Bridge, a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead author of the paper on the study recently published in the Journal of Neuroscience. "Your memory of an event can grow less precise even to the point of being totally false with each retrieval."

Bridge did the research while she was a doctoral student in lab of Ken Paller, a professor of psychology at Northwestern in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The findings have implications for witnesses giving testimony in criminal trials, Bridge noted.

"Maybe a witness remembers something fairly accurately the first time because his memories aren't that distorted," she said. "After that it keeps going downhill."

The published study reports on Bridge's work with 12 participants, but she has run several variations of the study with a total of 70 people. "Every single person has shown this effect," she said. "It's really huge."

"When someone tells me they are sure they remember exactly the way something happened, I just laugh," Bridge said.

The reason for the distortion, Bridge said, is the fact that human memories are always adapting.

"Memories aren't static," she noted. "If you remember something in the context of a new environment and time, or if you are even in a different mood, your memories might integrate the new information."

For the study, people were asked to recall the location of objects on a grid in three sessions over three consecutive days. On the first day during a two-hour session, participants learned a series of 180 unique object-location associations on a computer screen. The next day in session two, participants were given a recall test in which they viewed a subset of those objects individually in a central location on the grid and were asked to move them to their original location. Then the following day in session three, participants returned for a final recall test.

The results showed improved recall accuracy on the final test for objects that were tested on day two compared to those not tested on day two. However, people never recalled exactly the right location. Most importantly, in session three they tended to place the object closer to the incorrect location they recalled during day two rather than the correct location from day one.

"Our findings show that incorrect recollection of the object's location on day two influenced how people remembered the object's location on day three," Bridge explained. "Retrieving the memory didn't simply reinforce the original association. Rather, it altered memory storage to reinforce the location that was recalled at session two."

Bridge's findings also were supported when she measured participants' neural signals --the electrical activity of the brain -- during session two. She wanted to see if the neural signals during session two predicted anything about how people remembered the object's location during session three.

The results revealed a particular electrical signal when people were recalling an object location during session two. This signal was greater when -- the next day -- the object was placed close to that location recalled during session two. When the electrical signal was weaker, recall of the object location was likely to be less distorted.

"The strong signal seems to indicate that a new memory was being laid down," Bridge said, "and the new memory caused a bias to make the same mistake again."

"This study shows how memories normally change over time, sometimes becoming distorted," Paller noted. "When you think back to an event that happened to you long ago -- say your first day at school -- you actually may be recalling information you retrieved about that event at some later time, not the original event."

The research was supported by National Science Foundation grant BCS1025697 and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health grant T32 NS047987.

Prostate Cancer Survivor Celebrates Cancer-Free 50th Birthday ...

Personal Health Print

The following is a guest post by Jerry Bembry, journalism professor at Morgan State University.

I turned 49 a year ago today. At the time, I considered all the exciting things I wanted to do leading up to my 50th birthday. ?Fifty to Fifty,? was what I called my plan, and I began writing down the 50 things I wanted to do before hitting the half-century mark:

?Take a cross-country drive, visit the six remaining states that I?ve never been to, take in a Lizz Wright concert (where I had hoped to convince my favorite singer to serenade me)??

Absent from that list was the mission that wound up consuming my life over the past year: Fight cancer.

After a routine PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test a year ago, I was eventually diagnosed with prostate cancer: the same disease that claimed my brother?s life two years ago. It also claimed the lives of two of my uncles. Over the past year, I?ve learned just how truly devastating this disease can be.

  • Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men.
  • Prostate cancer is a disease that will affect an astonishing 1 in 6 men over the course of their lifetimes. (If you are African-American, the odds increase to 1 in 5)

My doctors told me the cancer was found early. As I prepared to have surgery in May, I detailed my family?s battle against the disease in an article that I wrote for TheRoot.com.

But on the eve of that surgery, I got a new scare: A CAT scan showed a lesion on one of my ribs, and there was a fear that the cancer had spread. More tests were needed, this time a bone biopsy. So four days before my scheduled surgery, it was called off.

My rib was tested and the lesion turned out to be nothing more than an old bruise. My procedure was rescheduled, and on July 12 I entered New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City to have my prostate removed via robotic surgery.

Today, on my 50th birthday, I can celebrate the fact that I?m cancer-free. Last week, I received the results of my first post-surgery blood test, and my PSA levels are virtually non-detectable.
But my battle is far from over. Even though my PSA levels are good now, there?s always a chance of them rising. Which is why I have to get a blood test every three months, and why I?m continuing changes in my lifestyle that will increase my chances of completely beating this.

This past year I?ve been through a lot. In my battle against prosate cancer I?ve encountered dozens of men who have battled the disease, and who were quick to offer support. Some of them I?ve known for years, though I never had a clue about what they faced. I?ve found that many men battle this silent killer in silence.

I speak about my journey with prostate cancer every chance I get. I?ve written about it in my blog, I?ve mentioned it in numerous Facebook posts, and today?on my birthday, and in the middle of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month?I?ll begin writing about it on a regular basis.

Some men hesitate even to get tested. I just want to let them know that early detection and successful treatment is a far better journey than having this cancer continue to an advanced stage, where it ravages your body and makes your bones brittle.

Trust me, it is not a pretty sight.

Back to my 50th birthday today (which makes me AARP eligible?let the discounts begin!). A year ago I was putting together my? ?Fifty to Fifty? list?filled with adventures that I never had a chance to begin.

I?m just thankful that a PSA test led to early detection, which led to a successful surgery. All that means is I can take that ?Fifty to Fifty? list (which is still a work in progress) and shift it to ?Fifty Beyond Fifty.?

And the good thing about ?Fifty Beyond Fifty?? Now that I?ve beaten cancer, I don?t have to rush.

Stop diabetes with insulin tablets?

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Could a capsule of insulin crystals a day stop the development of type 1 diabetes? There are indications that this could be the case. In the international TrialNet study, which follows relatives of individuals with type 1 diabetes, researchers are investigating whether oral insulin could prevent or delay the disease.

Type 1 diabetes is the autoimmune form of diabetes, in which the patients' insulin-producing beta cells are destroyed by their own immune system. "We know that if a person has two autoantibodies and one of them is against insulin, there is a 50 per cent risk that they will develop type 1 diabetes within five years. It doesn't matter how old you are," says ?ke Lernmark, Professor of Experimental Diabetes Research at Lund University in Sweden.

"There are indications that oral insulin may prevent or delay the clinical onset of type 1 diabetes among individuals with autoantibodies against insulin, who are thus in the risk zone," says ?ke Lernmark, who will be initiating and coordinating the Swedish TrialNet study.

?ke Lernmark refers to a study presented earlier in the year by American and Canadian researchers. In the study, which ran from 1994 to 2003, participants with relatives who had type 1 diabetes and at least two autoantibodies, one of which against insulin, took either oral insulin or placebo capsules containing an inactive substance. At first, the results were a disappointment. Just as many people in the treatment group became ill as in the placebo group.

"However, the subsequent analyses showed something different. Among those who had high levels of insulin autoantibodies at the start of the study, the oral insulin had an effect and the development of type 1 diabetes was delayed. The delaying effect lasted for as long as the participants took the insulin," says ?ke Lernmark, adding that those who are now being recruited for the Swedish TrialNet study with oral insulin also have high levels of autoantibodies against insulin.

No one knows how oral insulin might stop type 1 diabetes. However, ?ke Lernmark believes a possible explanation could be that the immune system becomes accustomed to the low daily doses of insulin in the gastrointestinal tract. The insulin is not perceived as a foreign substance to be rejected by the immune system.

This line of reasoning is the same as for desensitisation for allergies, in which the dose of the substance that provokes the allergy is gradually increased.

The oral insulin study will run for several years and is open to all those who meet the requirements and are aged between 3 and 45.

Pa. high court wants review of voter ID access

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Pennsylvania's highest court on Tuesday told a lower court that it should stop a tough new voter photo identification law from taking effect in this year's presidential election if the judge concludes voters cannot easily get ID cards or thinks they will be disenfranchised.

The 4-2 decision by the state Supreme Court sends the case back to the lower Commonwealth Court, where a judge initially ruled in August that the divisive law could go forward. The high court asked for an opinion by Oct. 2 ? just 35 days before the election.

If the judge finds there will be no voter disenfranchisement and that IDs are easily obtained, then the 6-month-old law can stand, the Supreme Court said.

But the Supreme Court's directions to the lower court set a much tougher standard than the one Judge Robert Simpson used when he rejected the plaintiffs' request to halt the law, said David Gersch, the challengers' lead lawyer.

"It's certainly a very positive step in the right direction in that the court recognizes that the state does not make adequate provision for people to get the ID that they would need to vote," Gersch said. "In addition, there is a practical problem with getting the ID to people in the short time available."

A spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of State, which oversees voting and elections, said the agency will provide whatever information a judge may seek.

"We believe, as we have all along, that any legal voter who wants to get an ID is able to do so," spokesman Ron Ruman said.

A Commonwealth Court official said Tuesday afternoon that no judge had been assigned yet to the task.

The court's three sitting Republican justices were joined in the majority by one of the court's Democrats, Max Baer. The court's two other Democrats dissented, saying enough evidence of voter disenfranchisement already exists to stop the law now.

The problem, the four majority justices noted, is that the state has had to scramble to solve impediments to distributing a secure, nondriver photo ID card promised under the law to any registered voter who needs one.

The justices noted that the state is unable to comply with that crucial provision because those cards are subject to federal rules requiring applicants to provide supplemental identification, such as an official record of birth. Some registered voters might not be able to produce that sort of identification.

In an effort to address that problem, the state began issuing new, voting-only ID cards in late August, after Simpson's initial ruling, that aren't subject to the stringent federal rules.

"Thus, we will return the matter to the Commonwealth Court to make a present assessment of the actual availability of the alternate identification cards on a developed record in light of the experience since the time the cards became available," the justices wrote.

Plaintiffs' lawyers, however, say registered voters are still having trouble getting the new voting-only cards. In some cases, state employees at driver license centers are having trouble verifying voter registration records, they said.

The Republican-penned ID law passed over the objections of Democrats and ignited a furious debate over voting rights, making it a high-profile issue in the contest for the state's prized 20 electoral votes between President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor.

Republicans, long suspicious of ballot-box stuffing in the Democratic bastion of Philadelphia, say the law would deter election fraud. But Democrats pointed to a blank trail of evidence of such fraud, and charged that Republicans are trying to steal the White House by making it harder for the elderly, disabled, minorities, the poor and college students to vote.

The law ? among the nation's toughest ? has inspired protests, warnings of Election Day chaos and voter education drives. It was already a political lightning rod when a top state Republican lawmaker boasted to a GOP dinner in June that the ID requirement "is going to allow Gov. Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania."

The plaintiffs ? eight registered Democrats, plus the Homeless Advocacy Project, the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People ? had sought to block the law from taking effect in this year's election as part of a wider challenge to its constitutionality.

Republican Gov. Tom Corbett signed the law in March after every single Democratic lawmaker voted against it.

The prior law required identification only for people voting in a polling place for the first time and it allowed nonphoto documents such as utility bills or bank statements.

(AP) ? A French magazine published vulgar caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad on Wednesday, brandishing its right to free speech amid global tensions over a movie insulting to Islam.

In response, the French government ordered embassies and schools to close Friday in about 20 countries and tens of thousands marched in Lebanon in protest.

The move by the provocative weekly Charlie Hebdo followed days of violent protests from Asia to Africa against the film "Innocence of Muslims" and turned France into a potential target of Muslim rage. Up to now, American government sites have drawn the most ire since the film was produced privately there.

Violence linked to the amateurish movie, which portrays the prophet as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester, has killed at least 30 people in seven countries, including the American ambassador to Libya.

The French government ordered its embassies and French schools abroad to close on Friday, the Muslim holy day, as a precautionary measure in about 20 countries. It immediately shut down the French Embassy and the French school in Tunisia, which saw deadly film-related protests at the U.S. Embassy there last week.

In the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre, tens of thousands of people marched through the streets Wednesday, chanting "Oh America, you are God's enemy!"

Nasser Dheini, a 40-year-old farmer, said he was angry over the anti-Islam movie and the French caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

"Freedom of opinion should not be by insulting religions," Dheini said, carrying his son Sajed, 4, who was dressed in camouflage military uniform.

Dheini said instead of boosting security at French embassies, France should close down the offending magazine.

Other development Wednesday included:

? The French Foreign Ministry issued a travel warning urging French citizens in the Muslim world to exercise "the greatest vigilance," avoiding public gatherings and "sensitive buildings."

? Several hundred lawyers protesting the movie forced their way into an embassy area in Pakistan's capital.

? The United States temporarily closed its consulate in an Indonesian city because of similar demonstrations.

? Hundreds protested the film in Sri Lanka's capital, burning effigies of President Barack Obama.

The magazine's provocative act plunged France ? which has western Europe's largest Muslim population ? into a new debate over the limits of free speech in a modern democracy.

A lawsuit was filed against Charlie Hebdo hours after the Wednesday issue hit newsstands, the Paris prosecutor's office said. It would not say who filed it. The magazine also said its website had been hacked.

France's prime minister said freedom of expression is guaranteed, but cautioned that it "should be exercised with responsibility and respect."

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warned that Charlie Hebdo could be throwing "oil on the fire," but said it's up to the courts to decide whether the magazine went too far.

The magazine's crude cartoons played off the film and ridiculed the violent reaction to it. Riot police took up positions outside the offices of the magazine, which was firebombed last year after it released an edition that mocked radical Islam.

Charlie Hebdo's chief editor, who goes by the name of Charb and has been under police protection for a year, defended the cartoons.

"Muhammad isn't sacred to me," he said in an interview at the weekly's offices on the northeast edge of Paris. "I don't blame Muslims for not laughing at our drawings. I live under French law; I don't live under Quranic law."

Charb said he had no regrets and felt no responsibility for any violence.

"I'm not the one going into the streets with stones and Kalashnikovs," he said. "We've had 1,000 issues and only three problems, all after front pages about radical Islam."

Government authorities and Muslim leaders urged calm.

"This is a disgraceful and hateful, useless and stupid provocation," Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Grand Paris Mosque, told The Associated Press. "(But) we are not Pavlov's animals to react at each insult."

A small-circulation weekly, Charlie Hebdo often draws attention for ridiculing sensitivity around the Prophet Muhammad, and an investigation into the firebombing of its offices last year is still open.

Charlie Hebdo was acquitted in 2008 by a Paris appeals court of "publicly abusing a group of people because of their religion" following a complaint by Muslim associations.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said organizers of a demonstration planned for Saturday against the "Innocence of Muslims" won't receive police authorization. Paris prosecutors have opened an investigation into an unauthorized protest last Saturday around the U.S. Embassy that drew a couple hundred people and led to about 150 arrests.

The debate about the limits of free speech spread to neighboring Germany.

"I call on all those, especially those who rightly invoke the right of freedom of speech, to also act responsibly," Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said in Berlin.

The German Embassy in Sudan, which was attacked last week, remains closed and security at German embassies in other countries has been beefed up, he said.

A German group in Berlin dropped plans to show extracts of the film "Innocence of Muslims" because of the outcry it has caused.

The cartoonist of the French caricatures published Wednesday, who goes by the name Luz, was defiant.

"We treat the news like journalists. Some use cameras, some use computers. For us, it's a paper and pencil," he said. "A pencil is not a weapon. It's just a means of expression."

Outside the Charlie Hebdo offices, a passer-by wearing a traditional Muslim tunic said he was neither surprised nor shocked by the cartoons. He criticized France's decision to close embassies and schools for fear of protests by extremists.

"It gives legitimacy to movements that don't have any," said Hatim Essoufaly, who was walking his toddler in a stroller.

In Pakistan, the lawyers who protested in Islamabad shouted anti-U.S. slogans and burned an American flag after they pushed through a gate, gaining access to the diplomatic enclave before police stopped them. They called for the U.S. ambassador to be expelled, and then peacefully dispersed.
