Gingrich and Clinton See '90s Flashback as Welfare Enters the Ring

Who would have thought the 2012 presidential campaign would take Americans back to the early '90s when welfare reform was the hot topic. It's back to the delicate dance of Newt Gingrich and Bill Clinton, the two people responsible for passing the landmark welfare reform in 1996, now with Mitt Romney and Barack Obama vying for the presidency, right in the middle.

President Obama announced earlier this summer that he planned to allow governors to seek exemption from the plan's work-to-welfare requirement. In recent days, presumptive Republican nominee Romney has been in full swing hitting Obama on his changes to welfare, a charge led by none other than Gingrich, who has been advising the Romney campaign since leaving the race on May 1, and suggested to advisers that Romney go in that direction, according to a Gingrich spokesman.

"President Obama, in just the last few days, has tried to reverse that accomplishment by taking the work requirement out of welfare. That is wrong. I'll put work back in welfare," Romney said yesterday in Chicago.

Even today, Romney was right on message, taking the audience back "a couple of decades ago," when "President Clinton and Republicans who were in Congress at the time came together in a bipartisan basis and said welfare in the future is going to require work." Romney went on to say then Sen. Obama was opposed to welfare reform, referring to a recording recently surfaced of Obama saying he probably would have voted against the reform.

"It is wrong to make any change that would make America more of a nation of government dependency. We must restore it and I will restore work in welfare," Romney said today in Des Moines.

Yesterday, the Romney campaign released an ad hitting President Obama on the welfare changes, using Bill Clinton as the pawn. The ad shows Clinton signing the reform into law, while an announcer says Obama's plans undermine him.

Clinton shot back yesterday in defense of Obama, saying the ad was "not true" and "especially disappointing."

Today it was Gingrich's turn to hit back, in what seemed like a 1990s do-over. Gingrich participated in a Republican National Committee call this morning, driving the message that Obama is making a detrimental change to the key reform he and Clinton worked so hard to pass.

"In many ways, Obama is the anti-Clinton," Gingrich said, comparing their ability to work in a bi-partisan effort and hitting Obama on the deficit, while saying Clinton balanced the budget. "I hope that every American, when they watch Bill Clinton speak, will realize how much weaker and less effective a president Obama is than the man who is nominating him."

Gingrich went on to say that Romney has picked a direction that is "exactly a clear, vivid distinction between the two parties," also saying welfare reform is a "deep ideological fight."

"I don't think they thought it would be a big deal. I think they thought they were being very clever and they thought that this wouldn't be noticed by anybody," Gingrich said, referring to the Obama administration's executive order. "Now they have a real fight and I think it's a fight they can't possibly win."

Gingrich said he'll do anything he can within Romney's campaign framework to help him.

"[Romney's] whole life is a life of work. He believes in work and the work ethic. And I believe that he'll be very effective," Gingrich said.

Gingrich's spokesman told ABC News to expect Gingrich to continue to help Romney out in public with messaging welfare or anything to help get Romney elected as well as behind the scenes with fundraising. Gingrich is doing a media blitz this evening on CNN and has also has an op-ed on the subject today in a conservative magazine.

Defense: Pastor thought mom OK to leave US

(AP) ? A Mennonite pastor worked with a number of other people to help a woman flee the country with her 7-year-old daughter rather than share custody with her former lesbian partner in Vermont, federal prosecutors said.

The 46-year-old pastor from Stuarts Draft, Va., is on trial on a federal charge of aiding and abetting in international kidnapping. Opening statements began Wednesday; the trial is to continue into next week.

Kenneth Miller is accused of helping the woman elude a Vermont court order to share custody with her former partner, and flee to Nicaragua to live with Mennonites there. The current whereabouts of the mother and her now 10-year-old daughter are unknown.

"We are here because others, including the defendant, Kenneth Miller, aided in her cause," Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia Cowles told the jury.

Miller's lawyer, Joshua Autry, said he will prove his client believed the mother had full custody of her daughter and could travel freely.

"Kenneth Miller thought that she was the full legal guardian," Autry said in opening statements.

Lisa Miller, no relation to the defendant, and Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven entered a civil union in Vermont in 2000. Lisa Miller gave birth to her daughter, Isabella, in 2002. The couple later broke up, and Lisa Miller returned to her native Virginia.

A custody battle ensued, and a Vermont judge transferred custody of the girl from her mother to Jenkins after the court says Lisa Miller refused to cooperate with visitation arrangements.

Prosecutors told the jury Wednesday that on Sept. 22, 2009, Kenneth Miller drove the mother and daughter from Virginia to Buffalo, N.Y., where the two crossed the Rainbow Bridge into Canada and flew to Central America and lived among Mennonites.

"In the dark of the night, Lisa Miller took her daughter across that bridge," Cowles said. "Lisa Miller didn't act alone."

Among the first witnesses, Ontario Mennonite pastor Ervin Horst said he picked up Lisa Miller and Isabella on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls after the two crossed into Canada by taxi. Horst said he was in regular telephone contact with Kenneth Miller and declined to cross into the U.S. to pick up the mother and child because he didn't want to cross an international border with them. He said he took them to the airport in Toronto the next day.

When asked if he knew about the custody case, he said he didn't know the details.

"Lisa did not feel good about what was happening and wanted to protect her daughter," he testified.

Romney's popularity stays low, but Obama's barely better

Mitt Romney is laboring under the lowest personal popularity ratings for a presumptive presidential nominee in midsummer election-year polls back to 1984. But Barack Obama has his own challenges in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, notably among registered voters, and with much weaker numbers among men than women.

Forty percent of Americans overall view Romney favorably, 49 percent unfavorably - leaving him underwater, at least numerically, in 10 straight Post polls this year. A new high of 30 percent now see him "strongly" unfavorably, nearly double his strongly favorable score.

See PDF with full results, charts and tables here.

Romney finished the primary season with the lowest favorability for a presumptive nominee in ABC/Post polls back 28 years; the question was whether that represented a post-primary campaign hangover from which he'd recover. The answer: not yet.

Indeed, while indecision about Romney has fallen from 37 percent last September to 11 percent now, the trend among those who've made up their minds has been largely negative: His favorability rating has gained 7 percentage points in the past year, but his unfavorable score is up by 18.

OBAMA - Obama, for his part, is seen more positively than negatively among all adults, 53-43 percent favorable-unfavorable, but slips to nearly an even split, 49-47 percent, among registered voters. That's still better than Romney's 42-50 percent among registered voters, but less sharply so.

"Strongly" unfavorable views of Obama and Romney are roughly the same, 31 and 30 percent, respectively in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. But an additional 29 percent see Obama strongly favorably, while Romney's strong favorability, as noted, is weaker, 16 percent.

Obama's advantage rests with women, among whom 58 percent see him favorably, vs. 47 percent of men - the widest gender gap in this measure of the season. Romney, by contrast, does better among men than women - 44 percent favorable vs. 36 percent. As such, the two candidates essentially are tied among men, while among women Obama does 22 points better.

CHALLENGERS and INCUMBENTS - With three months of campaigning ahead, these views don't predict the election outcome. Romney's 40 percent favorable rating is an insignificant, single point below George H.W. Bush's in mid-August 1988, yet Bush went on to win.

But there are differences. Negative views of Romney are 11 points higher than they were for Bush 24 years ago. (Twenty-two percent had yet to form an opinion of Bush, double the undecided on Romney.) And Bush's 41 percent was an election-year low, while Romney's 40 percent is a point from his high this cycle.

On incumbents, favorable views at this point in the race have varied widely in the past. Obama's rating is lower than that of most previous incumbents; but even among registered voters, his rating now is no worse that George W. Bush's 47 percent in midsummer 2004, a race Bush won.

INDEPENDENTS - Obama's gained back ground he'd lost among independents, customarily swing voters in national elections. In late May he fell numerically underwater among independents for the first time since December (45-52 percent favorable-unfavorable). He's now back far in front of Romney in this group, largely because of gains among independent women.

Among all independents, Obama's favorability rating is now 16 points higher than Romney's (53 percent vs. 37 percent). At the same time, that narrows among independents who are registered to vote - 46 percent favorable for Obama, 38 percent for Romney - indicating, among other factors, the potential importance of voter registration drives in the few months ahead.

GROUPS - Among partisans, Romney's caught up with Obama in popularity within his own party; 83 percent of Republicans rate Romney positively, as do 84 percent of Democrats for Obama. That's Romney's best-ever rating with the party faithful, up 25 points since mid-March.

Romney's rated favorably by fewer conservatives, 65 percent, though this, too, is a new high. Obama does better among liberals, 84 percent positive (a new high for him), though there are fewer of them. Moderates make a difference - 56 percent see Obama favorably, just 36 percent Romney.

Among other groups, Obama's more popular among adults younger than 40 and people earning less than $50,000, while Romney does better among 30-plus year-olds and the highest-income earners.

METHODOLOGY - This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cell phone Aug. 1-5, 2012, among a random national sample of 1,026 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4 points. The survey was produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates of New York, N.Y., with sampling, data collection and tabulation by SSRS/Social Science Research Solutions of Media, Pa.

Pictures of Love blog 5 'Love does not discriminate' - blog*spot

Love does not discriminate This months guest blog for 'pictures of love' comes from?Revd Ric Stott who is a Methodist minister, artist and art psychotherapist. He works in Sheffield as a Venture FX pioneer for the Methodist Church exploring new ways of being church based around the visual arts. More information on his ministry can be found at?www.iaskforwonder.com?Please feel free to leave your comments.?

So often in this area the church comes across as bigoted, homophobic and deeply unloving in its prejudice against same sex relationships. There is a little truth in this of course; like any organisation made up of imperfect human beings we will have our fair share of those who exhibit prejudice and close-mindedness. Furthermore, many gay and lesbian people have been deeply hurt by the church, myself included. But, this is far from the whole story. There are many people in the church who reflect the love of God shown in Jesus: a love that is open, inclusive and that celebrates life giving human relationships.

In the Orthodox tradition the icon is a window through which we can catch glimpses of God. I wonder if we can catch glimpses of the love of God if we look beyond the headlines that proclaim, for example, that the Pope sees gay marriage as a threat to humanity (A statement that would be laughable and ridiculous if it didn?t have such serious implications for those who believe what he says). Then we may see that love of God expressed in the relationships of gay and lesbian people across the world and celebrate it; just as it is rightly affirmed and celebrated in the love of a man and a woman. Where people love each other and give themselves to each other then Christ is present regardless of the gender of the individuals involved.

Recently the United Reformed Church in Britain has decided to allow blessing ceremonies for civil partnerships on its premises. Unfortunately the public policies of many churches still discriminate. I hope that one day soon other churches will be able to follow that lead and realise that the love of God is far more expansive than they had previously realised.?

Governors aside, feds building health care markets

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican governors who've balked at creating new private insurance markets under President Barack Obama's health care law may end up getting stuck.

Barring a Mitt Romney win in November, states that haven't set up the required markets could find Washington calling the shots on some insurance issues that states traditionally manage, such as handling consumer complaints.

It could turn into a political debacle for those who dug in to fight what they decry as "Obamacare."

The law envisioned states running the new medical insurance markets, called exchanges. But politics and ideology have intervened. And a fallback "federal exchange" now looks as if it will become the standard option in about half the states ? at least initially.

Wholesale Bulk Tea and Wholesale Tea Bags ? Get it All! | Desserts

Food and Drinks | Desserts | * Written by Robert Henson | Monday, 06 August 2012 00:58 | Word Count: 423

Some people may think, "Why on earth would I want to buy wholesale bulk tea when I can find it cheaply at the grocery store?" There are several answers to that question. The first answer is that you can find large quantities of your favorite organic or herbal tea that are not available locally. When you buy in bulk, you are assured that you will always have a supply on hand, and you can usually save a significant amount of money as well. The second reason is that many people love to give people tea as a gift, and some people make a good living making up tea gift baskets.

Depending on the situation, buying bulk or wholesale tea can be a fantastic investment. It is also interesting to note that tea is not just a pleasant drink. It has medicinal qualities, and can be used as a dye for cloth, to help soothe irritated skin, and for those esoteric people, to read the future. Tea has been well known seemingly forever. The best tea in the world comes from China, and when you buy bulk, you can afford these magnificent teas that have been around for centuries.

Wholesale tea bags can be bought almost anywhere, but that does not mean that you can find the best tea bags anywhere. For specialty teas, it really is necessary to find an online store that can ship the tea bags to you. Most of these stores will have a flat rate shipping price, or even ship for free. This is an additional savings, especially when you compare this cost to the cost of driving around looking for wholesale tea. The real advantage of buying online, however, is just the sheer amount of choice that you will have for the most exotic teas in the world.

For those who just prefer plain black teas, this is still a great option for you. If you enjoy drinking tea, why not get the best quality black tea bags through a wholesaler, and then you can get both quantity and quality for far less price. For those who are tea connoisseurs, you can typically get custom tea leaf mixes made up for you. Some places will even provide a bulk sampler that will let you experiment with the different types of teas before you buy them in bulk. Get the best tea and get the tea that you want at a price you can afford with wholesale.

The most common digestive system disorder people experience is heartburn, which is highly associated to acid reflux. Often, many people will encounter heartburn or acid reflux during night time. When this happens, a burning sensation in the chest will be felt. This particular pain is similar to heart attack symptoms. However, heartburn acid reflux is also a very serious disease that can affect many individuals including infants and young children as well as adults. Infants usually grow out from this condition after time while most young children will likely experience acid reflux in their lifetime. Meanwhile, many adults are likely to experience possible occurrences of this condition due to lifestyle factors and eating habits.

Understanding how heartburn occurs is essential to those diagnosed with acid reflux. Eating habits or lifestyle factors should be changed to prevent heartburn associated to acid reflux. As such, unhealthy eating or eating excessively in one time can cause improper movement of the gastric juices in the lower portion of the esophagus causing possible heartburn to occur that can result to acid reflux eventually.

These juices in the gastric area are highly acidic. When the gastric juice touches the lining of the esophagus, irritation and inflammation of the esophagus occur, causing heartburn. The abnormal gastric juice flow is due to either Lower Esophageal Sphincter, LES in short, caused by the relaxation of the muscle between the esophagus and the abdomen or other related factors such as structural defects or disorders like hiatial hernia or lifestyle factors.

Heartburn or acid reflux needs treatment especially when a night time attack happens. Night time attacks have similar daytime attack symptoms except that night time attacks include snoring, restlessness, fatigue and even abnormalities in breathing are all night time symptoms. Attacks during the night are more severe than attacks during daytime.

Many people with heartburn or acid reflux understand the cause of their condition. However, there are still many people lacking essential knowledge of how heartburn acid reflux can be triggered. The simplest answer is food. Many people experience acid reflux after having a large meal due to improper breakdown of foods causing acid reflux to occur. Foods such as spicy foods, chocolates, fried and fatty foods can trigger this condition. In fact, even citrus fruits have a tendency to flare up heartburn.

If you have been diagnosed with acid reflux, you should try preventive medication and treatments to help aid in its cure. One way that can help lessen the occurrences is by changing your lifestyle. A change in lifestyle can really help rid of acid reflux from recurring. Also, you should avoid eating aa heavy large meal at one time. Instead, eat small meals at intervals. Eating large meals can increase pressure in the esophageal sphincter and at the same time, expand your stomach. Other preventive measures include maintaining your weight, avoiding alcoholic beverages, and not wearing tightly fitted clothes around the waist because all these factors can cause acid reflux.

Acid reflux is a common condition that can lead to severe problems if left untreated. If you are diagnosed with this condition, always take necessary precautions when experiencing it to avoid further serious problems that could affect even the respiratory system. Because acid reflux is a serious problem, people with heartburn acid reflux should seek advice on how to prevent and treat this particular condition.
