New Year cheer starts early in time-jumping Samoa (AP)

APIA, Samoa ? The New Year's Eve parties started a whole day early on the South Pacific island nation of Samoa, after a hop across the international date line transported the country 24 hours into the future ? making it the first in the world to ring in the new year.

Samoans began celebrating under a rainbow of fireworks at the stroke of midnight on Thursday, Dec. 29 ? when the country skipped over Friday and moved straight into 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 31.

Samoa and neighboring Tokelau lie near the date line that zigzags vertically through the Pacific Ocean, and both sets of islands decided to realign themselves this year from the Americas side of the line to the Asia side, to be more in tune with key trading partners.

The time-jump revelry in Samoa continued throughout Saturday as the hours ticked down to 2012. Pools and beaches across the capital Apia were packed with Samoans and tourists celebrating the country's sudden position as the first in the world to ring in the new year, rather than the last.

Despite the extended festivities, Samoan police said there had been no reports of any problems.

"More than 90 percent of our people really appreciate the change, and that contributes to its success," said one official who could not be named as he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Elsewhere across the globe, people prepared to say goodbye to a year that was marked by upheaval and mass protests in several Arab countries, economic turmoil and a seemingly endless string of devastating natural disasters.

In Australia, people began crowding onto the shores of Sydney's glittering harbor early Saturday in a bid for the best spot to watch the midnight fireworks extravaganza over the iconic Harbour Bridge. The display was designed around the theme "Time to Dream," a nod to the eagerness many felt at moving forward after the rough year.

"It's about giving people the opportunity to dream of the year ahead and that hopefully it is a bit better than the year we've had," said Aneurin Coffey, the producer of Sydney's New Year's festivities.

Some of the fireworks were expected to explode in the shape of clouds ? "Because every cloud has a silver lining," Coffey said. A series of colorful lights will be beamed onto the center of the bridge forming an "endless rainbow" meant to evoke hope.

Many were eager for a fresh start.

"I've had enough this year," said 68-year-old Sandra Cameron, who lost nearly everything she owned when her home in Australia's Queensland state was flooded to the ceiling during a monstrous cyclone in February. "It's gotta be a better year next year."

For Japan, 2011 was the year the nation was struck by a giant tsunami and earthquake that left an entire coastline destroyed, nearly 20,000 people dead or missing and the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in meltdown.

At the year's end, many in Japan were left reflecting on the fragility of life, while remaining quietly determined to recover.

"For me, the biggest thing that defined this year was the disaster in March," said Miku Sano, 28, a nursing student in Fukushima city. "Honestly, I didn't know what to say to these people, who had to fight sickness while living in fear about ever being able to go back home. The radiation levels in the city of Fukushima, where I live, are definitely not low, and we don't know how that is going to affect our health in the future."

People across Japan were expected to spend Saturday visiting shrines and temples, offering their first prayers for the year. The giant hanging bell at temples will ring 108 times to purify the world of evil and bring good luck.

Kouichi Takayama, a university student, said 2011 was a year he would never forget.

"It was a year I felt the preciousness of life with a passion," he said. "But I was also able to catch a glimpse of the warmth of human relations, and reconfirm my gratitude for family, community and everyday life. I hope I can connect meaningfully with more people next year to create a Japan that truly endures toward the future."

In the southern Philippine city of Cagayan de Oro, people were still reeling from deadly flash flooding sparked by Tropical Storm Washi. The storm killed more than 1,200 in southern and central Philippines, 800 of which were in Cagayan de Oro.

For Ana Caneda, a disaster relief official in Cagayan de Oro, the new year "offers a new ray of hope."

"It's going to be a relief to write the date 2012, not 2011," Caneda said.

In Hong Kong, more than 400,000 people were expected to watch the 4-minute, $1 million display of fireworks that will shoot off from 10 skyscrapers, lighting up the city's famed Victoria Harbour.

Raymond Lo, a master of feng shui ? the Chinese art of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck ? said he wasn't surprised that 2011 was such a tumultuous year because it was associated with the natural elements of metal and wood. The year's natural disasters were foreshadowed, Lo said, because wood ? which represents trees and nature ? was attacked by metal.

2012 could be better because it's associated with ocean water, which represents energy and drive and the washing away of old habits, Lo said.

"Big water also means charity, generosity," Lo said. "Therefore that means sharing. That means maybe the big tycoons will share some of their wealth."

Boulder, CO, USA Misti volcano's last Plinian eruption happened ca. 2 ka, emplacing voluminous tephra-fall, pyroclastic-flow, and lahar deposits. Arequipa, located at the foot of the volcano, has a population of over 800,000 people and growing. Misti will erupt explosively again, and it is important to understand the past Plinian eruption.

This GSA Special Paper first provides a detailed description and analysis of the lahar deposits from the 2 ka eruption and the flows that emplaced them.

Because Misti is located in an arid region, the authors have also included a detailed discussion of the paleoclimate conditions that provided the water for voluminous mudflows. The authors further delineate the complete eruption sequence for the pyroclastic-flow and tephra-fall deposits, providing a narrative of the eruption progression and dynamics.

Finally, the book discusses the 2 ka eruption in the context of hazards from a future Plinian eruption and provides hazards maps for the different phenomena.

HBT: Johnson likely to be Orioles' closer

Earlier this offseason there was some talk about the Orioles possibly moving Jim Johnson into the rotation, but he now seems destined to remain in the bullpen and Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com expects Johnson to be the Opening Day closer.

That could still change if the Orioles acquire a veteran closer, but they whiffed on Huston Street and haven?t been linked to many free agents, leaving Johnson as the obvious in-house option after he converted seven straight save chances in September.

Johnson logged 91 innings in a setup role last season, so moving to closer might actually make him slightly less valuable for the Orioles if they limit him to the role?s usual 60-70 innings.

Another option is Kevin Gregg, who has plenty of closing experience and 144 career saves, but he was a mess in 2011 while saving 22 games and has long been a prime example of save totals being a misleading indicator of reliever ability.

Sunday 25th December, 2011

A charity single recorded by wives of British soldiers is now in Britain's number one spot.

Their song: "Wherever You Are" has sold over 556,000 copies.

The Military Wives hit the coveted number one position after outselling every other record in the top ten.

The charity single was recorded after BBC presenter, Gareth Malone, formed the women into a group.

The Military Wives choir, has now performed on many British TV shows as well as in person at various venues.

Profits from their single are being given to military charities the Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

In an interview, Gareth Malone, described the number one hit as an honour "well deserved."

He said: "It's testament to the Military Wives hard work and the nation's support of them, as well as the power of choral singing. Who would have guessed in those first rehearsals that we could take Christmas Number One?"

Mayor threatened by gunman

EAST CHICAGO (WISH) - ?The mayor of a northwestern Indiana city says he was threatened by a man who pointed a gun at him from an alley during his nightly walk.

East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland says he hurt his shoulder when he took cover behind a parked car during the Thursday night confrontation but no shots were fired.

Copeland tells The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville that he yelled at the man to draw attention and that the gunman ran away.

Copeland says he doesn't think the gunman knew that he was the city's mayor but was simply a robbery opportunity.

Police officers searched the area without finding anyone matching the gunman's description.

Copeland says he won't give up his nightly 2-mile walks, but might avoid that route.

Simple HTML Tag Crashes Windows 7 64-Bit

If you want to watch one of the fastest blue screens ever, just watch the video above. It demonstrates a yet-to-be-patch flaw in the 64-bit version of Windows 7 that not only crashes the OS, but compromise the system, according to software security company Secunia.

Secunia?s advisory says the problem is within ?win32k.sys? a core Windows file, and is triggered when an extremely large height value is set for an ?iframe? ? a tag that allows you to embed one webpage inside another. If used properly, the bug can be used to execute code at the same access level as the kernel. Which is fairly high on the permissions ladder, as you can imagine.

It was first reported on Twitter by user webDEViL on December 16.

Why you probably haven?t noticed this vulnerability is because it only affects Apple?s Safari browser, which isn?t exactly hogging market share on Windows PCs. While it shares the WebKit layout engine with Google Chrome, this bug hasn?t appear in the latter program.

Until Microsoft gets around to fixing the problem, the best thing to do is, well, not use Safari.

2012 crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweight

2012 crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweight

Jon Jones still has much to accomplish at light heavyweight, but as 2012 moves along there could be more and more talk of the 6-foot-4, 24-year-old seeking fights outside the division.

It's very unlikely to happen in 2012, but what if Jones moved to heavyweight?

Adam Hill penned a thought provoking piece for ESPN.com (premium access required). Hill spoke with Las Vegas and off-shore oddsmakers to ask what the odds would be if Jones locked horns with any of the top five heavyweights in the world.

The guys who set the numbers were split on their opinion of a Jones move up. Rob Akers, who used to set the numbers for the Venetian Sports Book, agreed with off-shore bookmaker Bovado (formerly Bodogsports.net) and said Jones would be a sizable dog against the top big boys in the world (featured odds in the graphic).

Bovada's expert Kevin Bradley makes UFC heavyweight champ the biggest favorite against Jones.

"Junior dos Santos' striking power makes him a significant favorite against Jones here," said Bovada sports book manager Kevin Bradley. "In order for Jones to have a shot at winning, he would have to take him to the ground, basically eliminating his boxing from the equation. Unfortunately, for Jones all fights start standing up and Dos Santos has an 85 percent takedown defense."

2012 crystal ball: Betting odds for Jon Jones if he moves to heavyweightLouis D'Andrilli, who sets the odds at Cantor Gaming (runs the books at The Venetian, The Hard Rock, M Resort, The Tropicana, and in the future The Palms) in Las Vegas, completely disagrees with Akers and Bradley. He says Jones would be a small favorite against the heavyweights. I don't believe that would be the case, but I'm a lot closer to siding with D'Andrilli.

Jones walks around at 225. His older brother Arthur, a defensive lineman with the Baltimore Ravens, is 6-3, 313. His younger brother, Chandler is a 6-5, 251-pound defensive lineman at Syracuse.

Jon's build is different than his brothers because he lacks bulk on his legs, but there's little doubt that he could pack on some extra muscle and walk into a heavyweight fight at 235. If he retained most of his athleticism and speed, is Jones really at a disadvantage against a 240-pound JDS or 244-pound Cain Velasquez (he was overweight for his last fight)? Jones is pictured next to the former UFC champ Velasquez. Does he look that much smaller?

This isn't about what I think or what Akers, Bradley and D'Andrilli this of Jones' actual shot to win these fights. The number is set to pull in two-way action. Once the public saw Jones carrying 235 pounds very easily, momentum would build that he has a good shot against the heavyweights. Therefore, money would come in on the smaller, more athletic fighter.

Looking for another light heavyweight who made the jump? We already have the test case in Randy Couture. Sure, the heavyweight division is better now than it's ever been, but the 220-pound Couture more than held his own against the heavyweights he faced from 2007-2009. Couture never appeared to be at a strength disadvantage against Tim Sylvia (263), Gabriel Gonzaga (252), Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (231) or? Lesnar (265).

Lesnar might be the toughest nut to crack for Jones. The former WWE star is super athletic and would likely outweigh Jones by 40 pounds. Would a gameplan of staying outside and trying to pick apart Lesnar be enough for Jones? Possibly, but if Lesnar ever got Jones in the clinch, it's hard imagine the lanky fighter staying on his feet.

Let's give it some time. Jones could have some very tough tests to? get through at 205 with Rashad Evans, Phil Davis, Dan Henderson, and possibly Muhammed Lawal down the road. All four have excellent wrestling backgrounds. Evans, Henderson and Lawal have big power too. No one here is saying that he destroys all four of those fighters, but if he does, the giants of MMA will welcome a Jones climb into the heavyweight division. So will fight fans.

Elburn church gives surprise gifts to 'miracle baby'

In the womb, Meagan Seals was the baby no doctor believed could or should be born. On Friday, the two-year-old became the recipient of a dose of some Elburn-area Christmas cheer that might help her keep beating the odds.

Luellen and Scott Seals learned just 14 weeks after conceiving Meagan that the odds were against her. Tests revealed Meagan's skull was not fully forming. Eventually, a clementine-sized portion of her brain would develop outside the back of her head.

?We were asked to terminate our pregnancy quite a few times,? Luellen said. ?Doctors just kept telling us she would have zero quality of life, and if she'd even be born breathing it would be a miracle. We kind of decided just to take our chances.?

The gamble paid off. Meagan was indeed born alive. But the news didn't get any better. She needed help breathing and wasn't expected to live more than two weeks.

The couple called in the Rev. Phil Ressler at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in La Fox to baptize her before she was removed from all the medical equipment she was on. But when all the plugs were pulled, Meagan continued to live.

?I've had a doctor tell me she's got two years to live,? Luellen said. ?Now it's past two years. I've had another doctor tell me five years, and another said 10 years.?

Besides the odds and gloom and doom from the doctors, Meagan has ongoing challenges. Her head is smaller than normal because her brain didn't grow to full size. What brain she does have is totally smooth, indicating it will never develop. But that's where Meagan defies the standard diagnosis yet again.

?We were told she'd be a vegetable and wouldn't know anything,? Luellen said. ?But she does know. She recognizes when someone says her name. She responds to music. Yes, she is very mentally handicapped, but she does know a lot.?

Unexpected gifts delivered to their door on Friday now have Meagan's parents hoping she'll soon know a lot more. Members of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church teamed up with Lutheran Church Charities to purchase a special chair to assist with Meagan's feedings, a second wheelchair that will allow her to sit up and see her surroundings when traveling with her family, and an iPad with special software designed to stimulate Meagan's brain through visuals. The couple also received a check for more than $9,000 to help with their $800 a month in out-of-pocket medical bills for Meagan.

About 60 members of the church family lined up outside the Seals' home to sing Christmas carols while delivering the gifts Friday afternoon. As the chairs appeared, so did tears in Luellen's eyes.

?This is so wonderful,? Luellen told the crowd. ?I don't know how you guys did it.?

The Rev. Ressler said church members wanted to help the family, especially during Christmas, because Meagan is a symbol to them about what the holiday really signifies.

?Jesus brings hope and light into this world,? Ressler said. ?Meagan is our little miracle. She reminds us that no matter how dark it might seem, there is that hope that Jesus gives us.?

US in talks with Europe, Arabs on Iran oil embargo: report

The United States, its European allies and key Arab states are intensifying talks on how to maintain stability in the global energy markets in case of a formal embargo on Iran's oil exports and its central bank, The Wall Street Journal reported late Sunday.

Citing unnamed US and European officials, the newspaper said such an embargo would constitute the most direct economic confrontation yet between Iran and the West.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz if such an embargo is introduced.

The West alleges Tehran is seeking to acquire a weapons capability under the guise of its nuclear research programme. Iran denies any such ambition and says its work is only for civil energy and medical purposes.

In recent weeks, Iranian officials have insisted the country was ready to face new sanctions against the oil sector and central bank.

US and European officials have indicated they are seeking assurances from major oil producers, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, to increase exports to the European Union and Asian nations if tighter sanctions on Tehran's energy exports and central bank are enforced in the coming months, the Journal report said.

These officials said there is also a growing discussion with emerging oil exporters -- such as Libya, Iraq, Ghana and Angola -- to increase their production capacities to guard against any shortages caused by the West's economic campaign against Iran, The Journal noted.

"If properly implemented, countries will trend away from Iranian supply," the paper quoted a European official as saying. "There are lots of conversations going on with Saudis at various levels on this."

Representatives from 11 countries involved in the financial war against Tehran will meet on Tuesday in Rome as part of a group that has been informally dubbed the "coalition of like-minded countries," The Journal recalled.

US, European and Arab diplomats said Iran's oil exports and global energy prices will be key issues discussed at that session, which Western diplomats said will include foreign ministry and finance officials from all the Group of Seven leading industrial nations, along with South Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the report said.

In addition to energy policy, the conference will focus on sanctions on Iran's finance and transportation sectors, and ensuring the free flow of information into Iran, the paper noted.

Iran, bracing for more sanctions, admits the pain
Tehran (AFP) Dec 19, 2011 - Western sanctions have taken such a toll on Iran over the past 18 months that now -- as the screw is about to be tightened yet further -- Tehran's studied insouciance is slipping, with officials admitting the economic damage being felt.

"War-time conditions" demanded dramatic policy reactions, the head of Tehran's chamber of trade and industry, Yahya AlEshaq, told Sunday's Iran Daily newspaper.

The country must now act "as if under siege," the governor of Iran's central bank, Mahmoud Bahmani, agreed in comments to reporters and businessmen over the past week.

Signs of economic difficulties have been accumulating: investments are becoming rare, imports are becoming pricier, and Iran's currency is sliding.

The United States and Europe are about to again ratchet up the pressure with measures against Iran's central bank and vital oil sector.

They will add to severe sanctions imposed since 2010 by a West trying to halt Iran's nuclear programme, which it suspects masks ambitions for atomic weapons, despite Tehran's denials.

The growing evidence of the sanctions' impact has prompted Iranian officials to drop previous assertions of business-as-usual and start acknowledging some economic pain.

"We can't pretend the sanctions aren't having an effect," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi admitted on the weekend.

But "we are not really worried," he told the official IRNA news agency, explaining that "appropriate responses have been prepared for the worst case scenario."

A "road map" to circumvent new sanctions had been readied, he said.

AlEshaq also said "the sanctions have had some impact on the domestic economy," notably by making imports 24% more costly.

"The enemies have embarked on a war in the economic sector," he said, calling for "war-era management" to be imposed in return.

Iran has already been establishing trade links with other, non-Western countries, notably China. But imports have still declined 20% in the past six months according to official figures.

Exports continue to hold up, however, largely thanks to the high price for oil in the global market -- a commodity that accounts for 80% of foreign earnings for Iran, OPEC's second-biggest producer after Saudi Arabia.

This year, the value of Iran's exports topped $140 billion, with oil and derivative products accounting for $120 billion of that.

But those figures "hide the fact that a growing part of trade is now being done under barter arrangements," said one European expert in Tehran who could not be named because of political sensitivities.

"To get around the US embargo on dollar transactions, the main buyers of Iranian crude, such as China, Japan and South Korea, don't pay in cash any more but rather through credit lines extended to Iranian companies, which reduces the central bank's resources," the expert said.

Iran said at the beginning of this year it had around $100 billion in foreign reserves and gold.

But dwindling revenue has forced the central bank in recent months to dramatically cut foreign currency sales to businesses and individuals, an Iranian banker noted.

The central bank has also eased up on its previous strong support for Iran's rial, letting the currency depreciate 20% since September.

The sanctions have also taken a noticeable bite out of the oil and gas industry.

Oil production, which has dropped 10% since 2008, continues to shrink with November output this year put at 3.5 million barrels per day according to OPEC.

Lacking options, Tehran has recently announced it is suspending several non-essential projects. And even ones deemed priorities, such as the development of the giant South Pars gas field in the Gulf, are running behind schedule, according to Iranian media.

Foreign "investment isn't coming any more, or very little is, because of the hostile moves" by the West, Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said in November.

He calculated his country needed $50 billion per year to develop Iran's production.

As a result, Iran has increasingly turned to its domestic market for capital, with varied success.

It has also been calling for local investors. In early December, for the first time, it handed development of an offshore oil field to a private Iranian bank.

The Progressive Honor Roll of 2011 (The Nation)

The Nation -- What a difference a year makes! Last year The Nation?s Honor Roll recognized courageous, if often lonely, battlers against an austerity agenda, an ascendant Tea Party and a Republican electoral wave that had put Democrats, working folks and the unions that represent them on the defensive nationwide. This year we celebrate the remarkable movements that have arisen not just to stem the conservative tide but to build a new vision of progressivism for the twenty-first century. How much has changed? As 2011 finished, even Barack Obama was sounding populist themes. And progressives were organizing, fighting and winning critical battles on the streets, in the polling places and in the media. The events of 2011 did not transform America. But they did confirm that millions of Americans are ready to fight for the 99 percent.

MOST VALUABLE SENATOR: Sherrod Brown

Faced with what was supposed to be a tough re-election race in 2012, Brown could have taken the easy way out when Ohio Governor John Kasich signed legislation attacking the collective-bargaining rights of public employees. Instead, Brown leapt into the fight, speaking and rallying with the workers of Ohio and even turning what had been his campaign website into a vehicle for the movement to overturn the antilabor law. It was a gutsy move, but it paid off. Brown?s poll numbers soared as Kasich?s plummeted. Brown threw himself into the successful campaign to overturn Ohio?s law in a November referendum. At the same time, he was fighting in Washington against flawed free-trade deals that shutter US factories while failing to bring prosperity to foreign lands. Brown, a leader in the push to address poverty and disease in developing countries, is anything but an isolationist. He?s an internationalist who understands the need for global resistance to policies that privilege corporations over workers from Cleveland to Chongqing. In 2011 he linked those struggles more effectively than any other senator.

MOST VALUABLE REPRESENTATIVE: Ra?l Grijalva

Few members of the House have been so consistently progressive as Arizona Democrat Grijalva, who has a history of challenging Republican, and Democratic, administrations on issues of economic justice, civil rights, and war and peace. Grijalva made headlines when?in the face of death threats?he opposed Arizona?s draconian anti-immigrant laws. He has been just as outspoken at the federal level, working closely with his Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chair, Keith Ellison, against the GOP austerity agenda while prodding the Obama administration to support a dramatically bolder jobs agenda. Grijalva?s no-punches-pulled progressivism is all the more impressive because he represents a district where in 2010 he faced a serious re-election fight. He saw off that challenge, proving that even in the toughest years it is possible, perhaps even necessary, to run left to win.

MOST VALUABLE STATE SENATOR: Nina Turner

?An apology! An apology! I want an apology!? announced Turner, a Cleveland Democrat, as thousands cheered the defeat of Governor Kasich?s antilabor legislation. Appearing on Ed Schultz?s MSNBC broadcast from Columbus on the night of Ohio?s historic November 8 vote, Turner was every bit as energetic and every bit as unyielding as she had been throughout the long campaign to defend the rights of public sector workers. Kasich ?owes Ohioans an apology for not working on the No. 1 issue, which is jobs!? said Turner. While many Washington representatives disappointed in 2011, state legislators stepped up as champions for labor rights, the public sector and economic justice. Turner wasn?t the only smart, passionate legislator to take the national stage, but the breadth of her agenda stood out. As she was standing up for workers? rights, Turner was also taking the lead on an array of economic development, voting rights and social justice issues.

MOST VALUABLE STATE REPRESENTATIVE: Diane Russell

A good case can be made that the most extreme of the new crop of radical right-wing Republican governors is Maine?s Paul LePage. An equally good case can be made that no one has caused LePage more frustration than Portland Democrat Russell. With deep roots in Maine and a record of agitating for progressive causes, Russell battled to block a right-wing move to eliminate Maine?s election-day-registration law. After Republicans rammed the change through, she became a leading advocate for the referendum that restored the law. Active with the Progressive States Network, Russell joined the protests in Wisconsin and returned to Maine with a renewed determination to pass pro-worker legislation. She succeeded with her work-sharing bill, which allows employers to avoid layoffs by making the state unemployment insurance program more flexible. Even Tea Party Republicans backed it.

MOST VALUABLE LOCAL OFFICIAL: Sheriff Dave Mahoney

The brutality of police crackdowns on the Occupy Wall Street protests from New York to California was a reminder that police do not always protect and serve. But there were notable exceptions. The most remarkable came in Madison, Wisconsin, when Governor Scott Walker ordered thousands of pro-union demonstrators cleared from the state Capitol. Mahoney, who since 2006 has been the elected sheriff for Dane County (Madison), helped coordinate the law-enforcement response to the protests outside and inside the Capitol. The sheriff said his responsibility was to protect public safety and First Amendment rights. As such, he objected to breaking up peaceful protests and to using deputies to shutter public spaces. ?I refused to put deputy sheriffs in a position to be palace guards,? explained Mahoney, whose deputies joined ?Cops for Labor? demonstrations in solidarity with the protests.

MOST VALUABLE STATE COALITION: Mississippians for Healthy Families

When antiabortion crusaders succeeded in placing a ?personhood? amendment on Mississippi?s November ballot, many of the state?s most prominent Democrats said they would vote for the proposal, which not only sought to ban abortion but also threatened access to birth control and the future of stem-cell research. Outside Mississippi, pundits assumed that the deep-red Southern state would amend its Constitution and put in play a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade. But ACLU of Mississippi executive director Nsombi Lambright and regional leaders of Planned Parenthood bet that voters would protect a woman?s right to choose. They organized a coalition of doctors, nurses, parents, students, clergy, and women?s and civil rights activists to campaign for a no vote. On election night, Mississippians rejected the measure by a 55?45 margin, proving that pro-choice politics can win anywhere in America.

MOST VALUABLE NATIONAL COALITION: The New Bottom Line

Objecting to a politics that makes Wall Street?s bottom line the nation?s top priority, National People?s Action, People Improving Communities through Organizing (PICO National Network), the Alliance for a Just Society, the Right to the City Alliance and the Main Street Alliance declared in 2011, ?We need a new bottom line that puts the economic interests and financial security of working American families first.? As the New Bottom Line coalition, they organized multi-state projects like the Move Our Money campaign to take $1 billion out of big banks. And the coalition allied with the Occupy movement in its Occupy Our Homes campaign, which supports families fighting foreclosure and eviction and helps homeless families move back into their vacant foreclosed homes.

MOST VALUABLE AGENDA: The National Nurses? ?Main Street Contract?

When most of the media and the political class echoed the austerity lie that said working Americans would have to sacrifice to pay off debts run up by Wall Street speculators, the National Nurses United union had another idea. It launched Heal America, Tax Wall Street, a campaign for a financial transactions tax, part of a broader ?Main Street Contract.? NNU leaders poured resources and energy into the campaign, linking it with struggles across the country and finally with the Occupy movement, for which the nurses provided on-the-ground healthcare. The agenda was clear and unapologetic in its demands, and NNU made the case, not just in the United States but working with international unions, that ?an economy for the 99 percent? should be paid for by Wall Street.

MOST VALUABLE CONFRONTATION: Iowa CCI
?
When Mitt Romney came to the Iowa State Fair, he tried to peddle the fantasy that entitlement cuts are needed because the only alternative is to raise taxes on Americans. But his framing of a false choice failed when activists from Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement hollered that we should ?tax corporations.? Unnerved, Romney shot back, ?Corporations are people, my friend.? ?No, they?re not!? shouted the Iowa CCI crowd. ?Of course they are,? replied Romney, who didn?t seem to realize he was embracing his own stereotype. In 2011 conservative candidates thought they could use Iowa as a backdrop for their extremist pitches. Iowa CCI didn?t let them get away with it?providing a model for how grassroots activists can mic-check even the most powerful politicians.

MOST VALUABLE RAPID RESPONSE: Iraq Veterans Against the War

When Iraq War vet Scott Olsen was seriously injured during the police crackdown on Occupy Oakland, IVAW leapt into action. It used every media list and social network to provide background information, videos of the incident and access to other vets who had witnessed this brutal overreaction to nonviolent civil disobedience against an economic system that has abandoned too many vets. Veterans for Peace quickly aligned with IVAW, as did other vet groups. ?We Are All Scott Olsen? marches and vigils were held across the country. When Olsen had recovered enough to speak about the incident, he used TV appearances to focus poignantly and powerfully on the plight of a new generation of veterans. He reminded Americans that as a marine, he had sworn an oath to serve the Constitution, which protects the right to assemble and to petition for the redress of grievances.

MOST VALUABLE MUSICIAN: Tom Morello

Wherever protests swelled in 2011, the veteran Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave guitarist was there in his Nightwatchman persona to sing ?Solidarity Forever,? ?This Land Is Your Land? and his own songs of the movement. After hitting the streets of Madison with Wayne Kramer of MC5 fame and the brilliant Street Dogs, Morello penned ?Union Town,? with its shout, ?If you come to strip our rights away, we?ll give you hell every time.? Before the year was done, Morello, who featured footage of protests in his videos and donated proceeds to union causes, had produced World Wide Rebel Songs, an anthem for a moment that began with the Arab Spring and is still going strong. When the Occupy movement exploded, Morello was singing at protest sites and signing on with Lou Reed, Amanda Palmer and hundreds of other Occupy musicians.

MOST VALUABLE ECONOMIC NEWS SOURCE: Beat the Press

Want to understand the Federal Reserve? Want to know why people who are facing foreclosure should be allowed to rent their home? Want to make sense of the eurocrisis and why it matters to you? Beat the Press, economist Dean Baker?s blog on the Center for Economic and Policy Research website (cepr.et), does not just have the answers to those questions. In 2011 his blog framed the debate to such an extent that media outlets, members of Congress and citizens came to rely on it as a resource and agenda-setting tool. Baker offered savvy perspectives on the fights over Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, as well as on issues like work sharing and a financial transactions tax. And he did it with perfect pitch, making sound economic arguments that activists could use.

MOST VALUABLE WEBSITE: Save the Post Office

Nowhere was the assault on public services more aggressive than in the push to downsize the Postal Service. Battered by a Congressional mandate that pensions be prepaid for the next seventy-five years, the USPS announced plans to eliminate services, lay off tens of thousands of workers and close as many as 3,700 local offices. The American Postal Workers Union and the National Association of Letter Carriers stepped up to fight the cuts, making powerful arguments against the slide toward privatization. And Steve Hutkins?s website, savethepostoffice?.com, became an essential resource for a network of grassroots groups in all fifty states defending local post offices?along with the idea that the founders were right when they argued that a strong postal service does not just deliver mail; it builds communities and links them as a nation. Best of all, Save the Post Office has made smart arguments for expanding the USPS by doing things like renewing the old postal banking system.

MOST VALUABLE JURIST: District Judge Jed Rakoff

When Rakoff rejected the Securities and Exchange Commission?s proposed $285 million settlement with Citigroup over the sale of toxic mortgage debt, he sent a shock wave through the financial-services industry and the regulatory community. Rakoff excoriated the regulators for appearing to be uninterested in Citigroup?s wrongdoing, dismissing the settlement as ?neither reasonable, nor fair, nor adequate, nor in the public interest.? This wasn?t the first time Rakoff has scored the SEC for seeming to be more interested in grabbing headlines than in cracking down on corporate fraud; in 2009 he rejected a settlement that failed to address serious issues raised by Bank of America?s takeover of Merrill Lynch. Rakoff has provided overwhelming evidence of why it is essential for judges to prevent regulators and corporations from cutting deals behind closed doors to avoid public trials, transparency and accountability.

MOST VALUABLE BOOK: Who?s Afraid of Frances Fox Piven?

The only good thing that can be said about Glenn Beck is that his attacks on Piven reminded Americans of just how vital her contributions (often with her late husband, Richard Cloward) have been to American progress. Piven has always asked tough questions about the role that economic inequality, structural barriers and outright suppression play in limiting the democratic franchise. The distinguished professor of political science and sociology has, through research and advocacy, played a critical role in securing reforms like the 1993 ?motor voter? law. Now that corporate interests are using groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council to undo a half-century of voting-rights progress, Piven?s arguments are more important than ever. Who?s Afraid of Frances Fox Piven?: The Essential Writings of the Professor Glenn Beck Loves to Hate (New Press) highlights her brilliant contributions to debates about poverty, welfare, voting rights and progressive reform.

MOST VALUABLE UNION: International Association of Fire Fighters

When GOP politicians attacked public sector unions, the response was overwhelming. The labor movement flexed muscles it had not exercised for years. Although labor did not win every battle, unions were back in the fight?and waging it with new sophistication and creativity. Leading the way was the IAFF. Firefighters were key players in one of labor?s biggest wins in years: the Ohio referendum that overturned Governor Kasich?s assault on collective-bargaining rights. And IAFF members taught a powerful lesson in solidarity when Wisconsin firefighters, exempted from Governor Walker?s attack on collective bargaining, nonetheless joined AFSCME, AFT, NEA and other unions on the front lines of resistance. The IAFF?s commitment and flexibility are exactly what unions need to build on the momentum of 2011.

MOST VALUABLE CAMPAIGN: Draft Elizabeth Warren

After President Obama decided not to fight to make Elizabeth Warren the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the agency she had conceived and gotten off the ground, most of official Washington assumed she would return to Harvard and teach law. But the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and National Nurses United had another idea: they wanted Warren to run for the Senate from Massachusetts. The PCCC push, and an early endorsement from the nurses, created an old-fashioned draft campaign. And it worked. Warren announced her candidacy on September 14. She is now one of a quartet of Democratic women?which includes Wisconsin?s Tammy Baldwin, Hawaii?s Mazie Hirono and North Dakota?s Heidi Heitkamp?whose economic populist campaigns hold out the hope that the Senate could be occupied by servants of the people, instead of what Senator Robert La Follette once dismissed as ?the feudal serfs of corporate capital.?

MOST VALUABLE IDEA: Occupy Together

Of course, the Adbusters magazine call to Occupy Wall Street was a stroke of genius. And ?99 Percent? was the perfect calculus. But what made the movement a movement was the concept that it could?and should?be everywhere. From Toledo to Des Moines to Pocatello to San Jose, Occupy groups sprang up, and all linked up on the brilliant, inspiring occupytogether?.org website. By the end of the year, the constantly updated hub was pointing millions of visitors to thousands of Occupy groups and to the message: ?We Stand Together! We Will Advance Together! And We Will Occupy Together!? n

Victims in mortgage case could get thousands

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Consumers who were victims of mortgage discrimination could get anywhere from $500 to thousands of dollars each as a result of a settlement?announced Wednesday by the Justice Department.

Under the deal,??Bank of America's Countrywide Financial unit is paying a?record $335 million to settle civil charges that it discriminated against minority home buyers.

More than 200,000 individuals were affected and could be eligible for payments from the fund.

Affected consumers include two different groups of victims who will be eligible for?two different types of damages,?said Ira Rheingold, executive director of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, who spoke with Justice Department officials about the settlement.

The first group involves Latinos and African Americans who had quality, prime loans with Countrywide but were charged more money, mostly in fees, for their mortgages than other consumers, Rheingold said. This group, which includes about 200,000 individuals can expect to get anywhere from $500 to $1,500.

The second set of victims, including about 10,000 Latino and African American borrowers, were steered into subprime loans even though they qualified for prime loans that carried a lower interest rate.

?Their damages may be more extensive,? Rheingold said, because in addition to being charged a higher rate many of these consumers ended up with greater financial problems as a result, including bad credit and possibly the?loss of their homes. Such damages could total?thousands of dollars per victim.

Rheingold expects the cases for the 200,000 victims to be handled much more quickly than those of the subprime borrowers, but overall he estimated most claims would be paid by the end of 2012.

?This is a good thing for the nation and for consumers,? said Kathleen Day, a spokeswoman for the Center for Responsible Lending, about the settlement.?

The settlement, she added, ?establishes what should a have been a line in the sand more than a decade ago. This never should have been allowed to happen.?

The Justice Department has identified the victims and will be contacting consumers directly about the settlement, but if you believe you were a victim or have questions about the case you can email the agency at: countrywide.settlement@usdoj.gov.

Holiday showdown over payroll tax tests Obama, GOP

(AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? Stuck in a stalemate, President Barack Obama and his Republican rivals are slugging it out in Washington rather than reaching for a holiday season accord to prevent payroll taxes from going up on 160 million workers.

The tax increases, as well as cuts to Medicare doctors' fees and a lapse in jobless benefits, are due Jan. 1. They are looming even though Democrats and Republicans agree that they shouldn't happen. Instead of stopping them, the factions have painted themselves into a corner.

House Republicans are demanding that the Senate join negotiations to produce an agreement within days; Senate Democrats insist no talks will take place before the House approves a stopgap measure to buy more time.

A House vote Tuesday scuttled a bipartisan Senate deal for a two-month extension of all three policies: the payroll tax cuts, jobless benefits and Medicare fees.

After the House killed the Senate measure on a 229-193 vote, Obama signaled he'll use his presidential megaphone to try to force Republicans controlling the House into submission.

"Now let's be clear," Obama said at the White House. "The bipartisan compromise that was reached on Saturday is the only viable way to prevent a tax hike on Jan. 1. The only one."

The Obama campaign promptly took to Twitter and Facebook to fight it out. With their candidate's poll numbers rising, Democratic operatives seemed almost giddy at the prospect of a prolonged battle.

Republican lawmakers relished the battle as well, though some of them are too inexperienced to know that presidents ? regardless of party ? usually win such high-profile fights, like President Bill Clinton did over a 1995-96 government shutdown or President George W. Bush did in skirmishes on anti-terror policies.

House Republicans instead rallied around a plan passed last week that would have extended the payroll tax cut for one year. But that version also contained spending cuts opposed by Democrats and tighter rules for jobless benefits.

If legislation isn't passed by New Year's Day, payroll taxes will go up by almost $20 a week for a worker making a $50,000 salary. Almost 2 million people could lose unemployment benefits as well, and doctors would bear big cuts in Medicare payments.

Whatever the stakes, there was little indication that Republicans would get their wish for negotiations with the Senate any time soon. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., issued a statement saying he would be happy to resume talks on a yearlong measure ? "but not before" the House ratifies the two-month bill and sends it to Obama for his signature.

Given Obama's remarks and Reid's refusal to negotiate, it was unclear what leverage Republicans had in the year-end standoff. It appeared likely the partisan disagreement could easily persist past Christmas and into the final week of the year.

A little-noticed element of the brawl was that the House-Senate parliamentary situation, which can be a critical factor, is all messed up. The Senate adjourned Saturday until Jan. 23 except for so-called pro forma sessions in which legislative business ? like responding to the House moves ? is basically impossible unless all 100 senators agree. That's never a sure thing.

The standoff was sowing confusion among business executives, who were running out of time to adapt to any new payroll tax regimen. Even the Senate's proposed two-month extension was creating headaches because it contained a two-tiered system geared to ensuring that higher-income earners paid a higher rate on some of their wages, according to a trade group.

"There's not time enough to do that in an orderly fashion," said Pete A. Isberg, president of the National Payroll Reporting Consortium trade group. "We're two weeks away from 2012." He wrote a letter to congressional leaders this week warning that the Senate bill "could create substantial problems, confusion and costs."

Meanwhile, Medicare announced Tuesday that, as it has in the past when doctors' reimbursements have been cut through congressional inaction, it would withhold physicians' payments for two weeks in January to avoid passing on a 27 percent cut in Medicare fees. The hope is that the problem gets fixed by then.
